If you watch YouTube videos through your Xbox and enjoy high quality visuals, you'll be pleased to hear that the console's app now supports streaming in HDR.

Watch YouTube in HDR on Xbox

If you own the last-generation Xbox One S or Xbox One X, or the current Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, you can now use the YouTube app to watch HDR content. The only condition is that you need to have a TV that supports HDR in the first place.

As reported by Engadget, the exact quality of the output will depend on your Xbox console. The Xbox Series X supports 4K at up to 60fps, while the Xbox One S offers 1440p HDR at 60fps.

Most content on YouTube isn't in HDR. You'll probably need to specifically hunt it out. Hopefully, though, as HDR support becomes more widespread, and TVs that support it become more affordable, we'll see more content in the format.

You can check the HDR video quality by opening the YouTube "stats for nerds", which shows it's using the PQ Rec.2020 HDR format and the VP9-2 codec.

If your TV supports HDR, the YouTube video will automatically stream in that format. You don't need to manually enable anything.

The YouTube app on the PS4 has had HDR support since 2019, though confusingly the same app on the PS5 is without. We can assume it'll be available eventually, though neither Sony nor YouTube have confirmed.
