In a bid to get users returning to its service, and to capture some of Spotify's popularity, YouTube Music has introduced a series of personalized playlists.

These playlists are automatically generated based on what you listen to. There are also new playlists based upon your mood or setting, like whether you want to relax or get your blood pumping.

What Are YouTube Music's My Mixes?

As announced on the YouTube blog, YouTube Music is calling these new personalized playlists "My Mix". Available now from the Home tab, you will find up to seven of these My Mix playlists.

These playlists are unique, generated automatically based upon what you listen to. The tracks within are those that you listen to often, along with new ones that are sonically linked.

The idea is that these playlists each offer something different. For example, one could be full of cheesy pop bangers, while another could be orchestral film soundtracks.

Along with these individual playlists, the playlist formerly known as Your Mix is now named My Supermix. This combines all of your music tastes into a single place. It's the ultimate go-to playlist if you want to hear what you love and discover new favorites.

Each of these will update often, so YouTube Music encourages you to check back often.

YouTube Music Also Has Playlists for Your Mood

Alongside these genre playlists is the introduction of playlists for activities or moods. These include topics like workout, focus, relax, and commute.

Simply select these categories from the Home tab and it will bring up a homepage full of playlists for that mood---some general, others personalized.

Again, like the My Mix playlists, these will feature a range of songs that you already know and those that the algorithm expects you will like.

Whatever you happen to be doing at that moment, whether it's a mellow mood or one full of energy, YouTube Music is trying to position itself as the go-to music streaming service to serve you the perfect tunes.

YouTube Music vs. Spotify

If all this sounds familiar, that's because Spotify has been doing it for years. Spotify's Daily Mixes and Discover Weekly playlists do exactly what YouTube Music is introducing here.

YouTube Music is behind the likes of Spotify, Apple, and Amazon when it comes to the music streaming market. However, introduction of features like this are only going to help it grow and compete against the big dogs.
