2020 has been an absolutely unprecedented time. It's felt like far more than a year, and it shows no signs of slowing down with its overall 2020-ness.

To really remind us of how bad 2020 has been, YouTube has decided to cancel its YouTube Rewind for the year, as announced on Twitter.

What Happened to YouTube Rewind This Year?

Normally, Rewind would look back at the most impactful videos, creators, and trends from the previous year. The Google-owned video streaming service has released Rewind every year since 2010, so 2020 is slated to be the first year in a decade without one.

Google released a statement regarding its intentions for 2020, and it basically said that this year sucked, and so it doesn't make sense to look back fondly on anything from the year that was.

The company did specifically phrase it as "taking a break," so it seems as though it intends to bring the Rewind back at some point in the future.

Of course, YouTube Rewind has received mixed reactions over the years. There was the fiasco that was 2018's Rewind and the not-so-loved Rewind from 2019, to name a few. Previous years certainly did better, but based on the last two years, Google might have made a good call in skipping 2020's look back.

YouTube did make sure to thank the content creators on its platform to lift people, help viewers cope, and make everyone laugh.

2020 Isn't Over Yet

2020 sure has been different, and we still have plenty of time left with the rest of November and December in front of us. So you may as well do something that brings you joy, whether that's watching your favorite YouTubers or a great documentary.
