Disney's live-action remake of Mulan was due to premier globally in theaters this year, but the COVID-19 pandemic put paid to that. So, instead, Mulan will debut on Disney+.

While you will have to pay an additional cost on top of your subscription if you want immediate access, Mulan will later become available to every Disney+ subscriber at no additional cost.

What Is Mulan?

Mulan is the live-action Disney adaptation of the animated 1998 film of the same name. The film is directed by Niki Caro and stars Yifei Liu in the titular role.

The story premise is the same as the original, in which a young woman disguises herself as a man in order to serve in the Imperial Army in place of her ailing father.

Disney delayed the theatrical release of its live-action remake of Mulan multiple times, despite having a Hollywood premiere in March 2020.

When it became clear that this coronavirus wasn't going away any time soon, Disney admitted defeat and announced that Mulan would be made available on Disney+ instead.

How Do I Watch Mulan for Free?

While everything on Disney+ is accessible with the $6.99 monthly fee, Mulan will be different. When it lands on the platform on September 4, those in the United States must pay a one-off fee of $29.99 in order to watch it. Disney is calling this service "Premier Access".

As long as you maintain a Disney+ subscription, you can then watch Mulan as many times as you like.

Alternatively, if you don't have a Disney+ subscription, the film will be available for purchase through other providers like Apple, Google, and Roku.

Internationally, the pricing and details vary. For example, Premier Access is generally cheaper elsewhere, including Europe and Australia. In France, Mulan will not be available for purchase due to a dispute with theater owners.

However, if you are willing to wait, you won't have to pay extra to watch Mulan. As detailed on the Disney+ Help Center, Mulan will be available to all Disney+ subscribers on December 4, 2020 for free (apart from the normal subscription fee).

You Can Watch the Original Mulan Now

If you can't wait to get your Mulan fix, don't forget that the animated original is available on Disney+, along with the 2004 direct-to-video sequel.

Those two Disney films are just some of the great classic movies available to watch on Disney+.
