If entering that extra password to sign in to Twitter is simply too much strain for your thumb, then it will please you to know you can now log in using your Apple ID or Google sign-in details.

Twitter Introduces Apple ID and Google Account Sign-In

Twitter has thrown caution into the wind, and is now allowing Tweeps to sign in using their Apple ID or Google account login details. So, if you want to remember one less password (ahem, why aren't you using a password manager?) then you can access the popular social media platform using these alternative methods.

In a tweet (shown above) posted on August 2nd, @TwitterSupport announced the extra feature. Stating that it will now allow Twitter users to "sign on with ease and start scrolling [their] timeline," the post states that those logging in or signing up to the service can use a Google Account on the app and via a web browser, and an Apple ID on iOS, with browser access to follow.

However, does this raise questions around security?

Is Signing In to Twitter With Apple ID or Google Account Details Safe?

That depends on how you look at it. There has been much conjecture over recent years that single-sign in options aren't actually all that safe.

To expand, these sign-in methods may be convenient, as you don't have to remember a ton of passwords. However, given that many people recycle their passwords across websites, this can prove a problem if a recycled password is compromised on a website you use. It essentially opens up all of your other password-protected services to hackers or phishers.

However, if you use a separate password for every website you login to, then single-sign in shouldn't pose too much of a problem. Particularly with your Google account, which allows you to view compromized passwords and change them in the click of a button. However, if you genuinely want to keep your details as out of harm's way as you possibly can, then we strongly recommend using a password manager such as LastPass or 1 Password.

As you can see, the new login or sign-up methods come with both pros and cons. It is up to you how you sign into Twitter, or how you sign up, but you should always be aware of how safe your details are, choose strong passwords, and (to drum it into you one last time) use a password manager to keep your logins safe and secure.
