Yeelight has announced the latest iteration of the Smart LED Bulb M2, a multicolor bulb compatible with the Google Home app's Seamless setup function.

The multicolored bulb uses a Bluetooth connection in operation and requires Google Home compatible hardware like Home and Nest smart speakers.

Yeelights Just Got Way Easier to Use

Previous iterations of the M2 Smart Bulb required users to either use the Yeelight app, or sign in to a Mi account via the Google Home app. The new bulbs simplify the process, integrating directly with Google Home products via the Seamless setup function in the Google Home app.

The Yeelight LED Smart Bulb M2 (multicolored) will purportedly retail at $29.99 and be available via Amazon in January 2021. It's worth noting that the new bulb has a very similarly-named counterpart in the Yeelight LED Smart Bulb M2, which is a completely different product altogether.

Luckily, Yeelight has a history of products with much higher quality than its naming regime, and the convenience this bulb brings will likely make it a popular budget smart home choice.

Upgraded Yeelight Smart Bulb: The Specs

Yeelight's upgrade doesn't bring anything new in terms of specifications, but at the low price they are offering that isn't all that surprising.

  • Bulb Type: E26/E27
  • Power: 8W
  • Brightness: Up to 1000 lumens (~ 90W incandescent light)
  • Color Temperature: 1700-6500K
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth
  • Lifetime: 15,000 hours
  • Compatible assistants: Google Home, Google Home Mini, Nest Mini, Nest Hub Max, Nest Hub, Google Home Max, Nest Wifi
  • Dimensions: 60 mm Ø x 124 mm

Far more impressive than any specifications is the ease with which these lights should work. The setup will essentially be plug and play. Once the light is installed, you can add a new device via the Google Home app, specify which room it is in, and let the app complete the setup.

Smart Lighting Gets Easier to Use

Changing the way these bulbs work with Google devices is a smart move. Smart home devices are getting more streamlined, and even old enemies like Samsung and Google work with each other's products now.

Yeelight has a history of producing great quality low budget smart lighting, and the main thing holding them back was the reliance on using proprietary apps, or making yet another account with a service provider. Those familiar with larger brand smart home devices that already feature in apps from Apple, Google and Amazon used to be able to claim both quality and convenience when choosing their setup.

When this kind of quality is available for such a low price, and the setup is as convenient as any competitor, Phillips et al may be paying attention to these new Yeelight bulbs – no matter how badly they are named.
