I am running Windows 7 and it seems to be progressively slowing down. I did a search on registry cleaners and optimizers, but the feeling is that it is best avoided because of potential for serious resulting problems.

Any advice on keeping the PC optimized?

maybe you have installed too many files in your C drive. Just tidy it up and move them to other drives.
