Exodus is the third installment to the Metro series. It's a great game, but it does have some technical issues on Windows. Ever since its release, players have posted on support forums about game bugs that crash Metro Exodus. Many of them have needed to fix frequent crashing during the Caspian Sea part of Metro Exodus.

When Exodus crashes, the game completely freezes, forcing you to restart your PC. And if these regular random crashes are bad enough, they can make Exodus unplayable. These are some of the best ways to fix recurring Metro Exodus crashes in Windows 10.

1. Lower Your Graphical Settings in Metro Exodus

Firstly, try lowering the graphical settings in Metro Exodus. If you’re playing Metro Exodus on a PC that barely eclipses its minimum system requirements, it might be the case that you have configured the graphical settings a bit too high.

Also, your PC’s graphics card might not be compatible with some of the game’s more fancy higher graphical effects, such as Ray Tracing and Hairworks.

Furthermore, DirectX 12 mode can cause Exodus to crash on some PCs. Players have confirmed that switching to DirectX 11 can fix the crashing. So, try lowering graphical settings and selecting DX 11 in Metro Exodus as follows.

  1. Launch the Metro Exodus game as you usually do.
  2. Select Options on the game’s title screen.
  3. Then select the Video category to bring up the options in the screenshot directly below.

  4. Select a lower Quality preset option than the one currently selected.
  5. Change the DirectX option to DX 11.
  6. It’s also recommended that you disable the Hairworks and V-Sync settings if they’re selected.
  7. Press Esc and Enter to apply the settings.
  8. Once you're done, restart the game.

2. Disable Full-Screen Optimizations and Run Metro Exodus as an Administrator

Some players have said they’ve been able to fix regular Metro Exodus crashing by disabling full-screen optimization. The Compatibility tab on the game’s properties window includes the Disable full-screen optimizations option. Furthermore, you can select to run Exodus as an administrator from the same tab, which might also help. This is how you can select those settings for Metro Exodus.

  1. Press File Explorer’s Win + E keyboard shortcut.
  2. Open the Metro Exodus installation folder that includes the game’s MetroExodus.exe file.
    The MetroExodus game folder
  3. Right-click MetroExodus.exe to select Properties.
  4. Select Compatibility on the MetroExodus.exe Properties window.
  5. Then click the Disable full-screen optimizations and Run this program as administrator checkboxes to select those options.
    The Compatibility tab
  6. Press the Apply button to save those settings.
  7. Click OK to exit the game’s properties window.

3. Assign a Higher Priority to Metro Exodus

Metro Exodus is a system-resource heavy game. It’s less likely to crash when you assign higher processing priority to that game. By doing so, you’re allocating more processor power to Exodus than background services and programs. You can assign higher priority to Exodus via the Task Manager like this.

  1. First, start the Metro Exodus game.
  2. When you’re at the game’s title screen, press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete key combination.
  3. Select Task Manager on the small menu.
  4. Right-click the taskbar on the desktop and select the Task Manager option.
  5. Select the Details tab shown directly below.
The Details tab in Task Manager
  6. Right-click the Metro Exodus process on the Details tab and select Set priority.
    The High priority option
  7. Then select the High option on the submenu.
  8. Press the Change priority button on the dialog box that pops up.

After that, return to and start playing Metro Exodus. Note that you’ll need to assign higher priority to Exodus every time you launch the game because that isn’t a permanent option.

4. Stop Overclocking Your CPU

Have you been revving up your PC’s processor speed with any kind of overclocking software? If so, that could be the reason why you need to fix the Metro Exodus game crashing.

Undo any overclocking you’ve applied by restoring the CPU (and any other overclocked hardware) to its default setting. If you’re utilizing overclocking software like MSI Afterburner, there might be a reset option to restore system defaults.

5. Update Your Graphics Card's Driver

Outdated graphics card drivers are one of the more regular causes for gaming issues, be it Metro Exodus or any other title. If your PC’s graphics card has an outdated driver, updating it will certainly enhance gaming performance. So, install the latest driver available for your PC’s GPU (graphics processing unit).

The built-in ‘driver updater’ utility in Windows is no longer sufficient for updating device drivers because it doesn’t search online. To ensure your graphics card has the very latest driver available, download its driver pack from the NVIDIA or AMD websites. You’ll need to be clear about what graphics card to search for on the manufacturer’s website. This is how you can check your PC’s GPU details in Windows.

  1. Right-click Start to select the Device Manager option on the WinX menu.
  2. Double-click Display adapters to view that device category.
  3. Right-click the graphics card listed there and select Properties.
  4. Note down the graphics card model specification from the General tab.
    The General tab
  5. Click the Driver tab from which you check the current driver version installed.

Thereafter, open the driver download section of the company website (NVIDIA or AMD) for your graphics card. There search for and open your graphics card’s driver download page. Download the latest compatible driver package for your PC from there. Double-click the driver package in the folder you downloaded it in to install the new driver.

6. Verify the Game’s Files

Metro Exodus might crash because of corrupted or missing game files. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to reinstall the game. Instead, try verifying the game’s files. You can verify Exodus in Epic Games as follows.

  1. Open the Epic Games launcher.
  2. Select the Library tab.
  3. Click the three-dot button for Metro Exodus.
The Verify option in Epic Games
  4. Then select the Verify option.

You can also verify the game’s files within Steam in a similar way. To do so, right-click Metro Exodus on Steam’s Library tab and select Properties. Then click Verify Integrity of Game Files on Local Files tab.

7. Uninstall GeForce Experience

Koch Media has confirmed GeForce Experience’s "In Game Overlay" feature can generate Metro Exodus issues. Exodus doesn’t mix well with programs that utilize overlay features.

To check if Geforce Experience is causing your crashes, it’s best to uninstall it and see if the problem persists.

  1. To quickly open the Run accessory, press the Win + R key combination.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl in the Open box.
  3. Click OK to open Programs and Features.
The Programs and Features Control Panel applet
  4. Select GeForce Experience there, and click the Uninstall option for it.
  5. Restart Windows 10 when you’ve uninstalled GeForce Experience.

If you want to keep GeForce Experience, you can always reinstall it when you’ve finished playing Exodus. To reinstall that software, you can download the latest GeForce Experience version from the NVIDIA website.
