So with most smartphones adopting dual or quad core processors more or less, I believe moving onto a 64-bit platform is the next logical step. With ARM releasing 64-bit architectures not so long ago, have all the major smartphone players started working towards this goal?

Interesting line of thought. Just taking a bit furthur, with Canonical jumping onto the smartphone OS bandwagon, would love to see a Ubuntu 64bit smartphone OS in the near future, which can get decked into the desktop OS also. :)

Society never stops advancing... Well, until there is a catastrophic disaster and we lose all sense of technology, knowledge, and such.. But, if that doesn't happen in the next 5-10 years, I'd say YES. :)

It will come in the not-so-distant future.Manufacturers these days tend to have a policy of If it isnt broken lets break it rather than Dont fix what isnt broken attitude.

this will depend on manufactures of semiconductors like samsung, qualcomm ,intel if processors are powerful the os will be available in future. 64bit takes double ram as of 32bit and will obviously take more battery

Depends what you consider near. "Licensees of ARM's new 64-bit Cortex A-50 series include AMD, Broadcom, Calxeda, HiSilicon, Samsung and STMicroelectronics, the company said, and the first chips are expected to ship in 2014."From http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/10/30/us-arm-64-bit-idUSBRE89T17N20121030
