On April 3rd, 2023, Twitter's logo suddenly, and inexplicably changed from the classic blue bird to a Doge. That being the Shiba Inu dog that spawned a classic meme, and even had a cryptocurrency, called Dogecoin, named after it.The Doge replaced the bird that has been synonymous with Twitter from its inception. But why?

Why Did Twitter Change Its Logo From a Bird to a Dog?

Many theories have circled about why Twitter (or Elon Musk himself) decided to do this. The only statement from Musk, the owner of the social media platform, was the tweet embedded above that includes a screenshot in which he states having Doge as the logo would be “sickkk.”

One popular theory was that the logo switch was an April Fool’s Day prank that launched late, since Doge first appeared in place of the familiar bird a couple of days after April 1, 2023.

According to Fortune, the change might also have had something to do with Musk’s love for, and investment in, Dogecoin (what is Dogecoin?). The logo change pushed the value of the cryptocurrency up by 20 percent in a matter of days.

Whatever the real reason behind the change, Twitter users did not find it nearly as amusing as Musk. Many users cringed at the joke or pointed out Twitter’s other flaws that should maybe take priority over changing the logo. Twitter Blue (what is Twitter Blue?), was an added complaint point for many users talking about the Doge logo, as can be seen in the tweet embedded below.

As reported by Reuters, Musk is also facing a lawsuit involving his public support of Dogecoin from investors of the coin. This logo change may be a stunt related to the lawsuit. A way for Musk to publicly mock the suit. But unless and until Musk reveals the truth, we'll never know.

The Legend of the Doge Lives On

Doge has been a popular internet meme for several years, way before Dogecoin was even created. And Twitter’s use of the cute Shiba Inu on its website is just another chapter in the famous dog’s book.

Unfortunately for the Doge, and for Dogecoin owners hoping their day had arrived, Twitter changed the logo back to the traditional blue bird after just a few days. Still, seeing the Doge staring back at you every time you opened Twitter was fun while it lasted.
