Why does the VM software I installed provide 4 virtual network connections?

How are these multiple VM network connections typically used, and what has to be configured differently for each?

6.If this virtual machine was converted from a physical system, verify that there are no hidden network adapters present.http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1003893VirtualBox allows you to configure up to 8 virtual NICs (Network Interface Controllers) for each guest vm (although only 4 are exposed in the GUI) and for each of these NICs you can configure:https://blogs.oracle.com/fatbloke/entry/networking_in_virtualbox1VM's have NIC's that connect to virtual switches that are then assigned physical ports., most generally 6 nics per host 1 port for management network.2 ports for the guests,2 ports for iSCSI / NFS1 Port for vMotion.

I'm not sure I'm technical enough to relate to why you would want to be able to do all this - what type of applications or uses require such connectivity on a single machine ?

VM software usually sets up network connections for network adapters that are installed on your computer. LAN and wireless are configured same as host OS.
