Why do internet giants acquire popular apps? Does acquiring add registered users from apps to user database of the internet giants? Or is acquiring mainly done by the big portals to use codes of the apps to enhance features in its interface? Or both?

It gets them advertising revenue, which is foremost. It also gets them newer ideas and newer niche technologies, which is another plus.

Sometimes it's for the user base, as you suggested. Sometimes it's to inject a stagnate company with new ideas – startups can bring an excitement to a company that's otherwise lacking. Sometimes it's to acquire a technology. Think about Facebook acquiring Instagram. Facebook, as a company, was not a contender in the smartphone photo sphere – despite being a dominate playing the photo sharing sphere. Facebook released, months after buying Instagram, a Facebook Camera app that replicated much of Instagram itself. This brought Instagram-like functionality to Facebook's users. Facebook leveraged Instagram's team and tech to build a service that compliments Facebook that also doesn't directly compete with Instagram itself. Instagram itself keeping growing independently, giving Facebook an audience significantly more tech-savvy then their core one. Which brings me to another reasons companies acquire startups: to leverage brands. Instagram is "cool" in a way that Facebook currently is not, meaning Facebook can test new photo tech on Instagram without alienating their less tech-savvy user group (1/7th of earth's population). Does this help?

It's not always specific features. It's about getting access to the team, and the ideas. And those Glancee features might be coming; it takes time. Stay tuned.
