Apple officially announced iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 at WWDC 2023. The new software iterations for iPhone and iPad bring forth various exciting features on both platforms. iPadOS 17 offers interactive widgets, more Lock Screen customization, Lock Screen widgets, and more.

On the other hand, iOS 17 introduces NameDrop, StandBy, a redesigned Phone app, search filters in Messages (also available in iPadOS 17), and more.

Which iPhones Models Support iOS 17?

Apple has confirmed that iPhones released in 2018 and later can officially run iOS 17. Here is the complete list of iPhones that support iOS 17:

Apple no longer supports iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus, launched in September 2017. These models will be limited to iOS 16, which Apple rolled out in 2022. If your model is unavailable in the compatible list, that's one of the many signs it's time to upgrade your iPhone.

Which iPad Models Support iPadOS 17?

Apple has also dropped support for some old iPad models that received iPadOS 16 in 2022. The complete list of iPadOS 17-compatible iPads includes the following:

  • iPad Pro (2nd generation and later)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad (6th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later)

Compared to the official list of iPadOS 16 compatible iPads, two models are missing: iPad Pro (1st generation) and iPad (5th generation). You can't update your iPad to iPadOS 17 if you own any of those models or older ones.

When Will Apple Release iOS 17 and iPadOS 17?

Apple will officially release iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 in the fall of 2023. And as always, Apple has provided no specific date regarding the software rollout.
