I've recently been forced to upgrade my web hosting from a VPS solution to a dedicated server - after a link on reddit brought a significant traffic surge that disrupted other customers on the VPS server.

Unfortunately, the host I'm with has tried to charge me nearly double the rate they have advertised on their website - surprising because they're supposed to be one of the best web hosts out there.

My question is, for a starter level, dedicated web server for a site that gets approximately 3000 to 6000 visitors a day with an occasional spike to 20 to 40k maybe one day a month, what's a decent monthly cost?

The starter plan at my host is just under $150, but they tried to charge $250. So, what's "normal" for a small site that needs a dedicated server?

There's a trade off - you need to have a good handle on traffic levels and ensure the package provides sufficient without throttling or excess traffic charges. Pages/visitors is not a good measure, (mega- giga-) bytes of data served is the measure you need.Add in to that reliabilty (up-time) fault tolerance of server (raid disks, backups) support availability and quality.Broadly speaking, the more you want the more you pay.
