Hacking is fine. Cracking is illegal. Search google with the following seach term "filetype:pdf Hacking" to get some good ebooks. There are no sites which are free and teach you how to hack without making you a cracker. I don't trust such sites anyway. Read books on systems, Languages (C, Java, Python etc.), OS (Linux) etc to increase your knowledge. There isn't a step wise algorithm to become a hacker. Your knowledge is only thing that can help you hack and these are the tools you cna use to increase your knowledge.

A great way to start learning is to go get a few certifications, such as A+, Linux+, and CCNA, or at least the books for them. They will teach you about some basic security measures and ways around them. How you use the skills gained is on you however.

Hacking is a rather broad topic that involves all, hardware, software, legal and illegal things. It doesn't even have to do with computers or the internet "directly".For example the following pages offers a lot of stuff on hardware hacks.http://hackaday.com

One of the older but still kicking website is www.astalavista.com. Built by hackers for hackers...though now they are more about hacking and security against hacking.

Making an alteration to a system without the owners consent is illegal as others have stated but "ethical hacking" is a very lucrative business and I hope the knowledge you gain you put to good use instead of trying to harm others... There's always a federal pen if you go the route of the darkside...lol
