Use Piriform ccleaner, it is the most popular freeware in the world. It does a load of stuff, like all temporary file cleanup, browser and application cache cleanup, registry cleanup and also registry backup. Very simple to use. Download : https://www.piriform.com/ccleanerHow to backup the registry is explained here (read in full) : https://www.piriform.com/docs/ccleaner/using-ccleaner/registry-cleaning

Piriform Forum has confirmed what Oron Joffe has said is correct. I apologise for the wrong advice given. Kindly ignore the advice given by me. Probably should have simply advised to take a backup by regedit export. :)

I use http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/registry_backup.html and many other tools from Tweaking.com. Updates to the programs are consistent and always free. The Windows Repair and Registry Backup tools are recommended by Microsoft Support technicians

You could do it manual as Rob H suggests, but if you really want (free) software I would suggest RegBak.I've been using it for a while, and it's really easy to use...Here you can find a download link:http://download.cnet.com/RegBak/3000-2242_4-75183941.htmlI'm not sure it's the most recent version, but hey, you could still Google it if you want :-D

May differ a bit depending on your configuration:run regedit.exe (win7 type into the "search programs and files" box)In the editor results do file>export.Beware of messing with other aspects of regedit - changes can be fatal

You can back up your registry without any third party software!regardless of what version of windows you are running, click the start button, then in the run box type "regedit", then hit enter.in the top menu, click "file" then "export" you can then choose via the dialog box, where you want the file backed up.
