Just out of curiosity, I was wondering what combinations of operating systems MakeUseOf users have for their primary devices, such as phone(s), laptop(s), home desktop (if any), tablet (if any). Be as specific as possible with your OS (4.2.2 instead of Android). What's your reasoning behind using this combination of OSes for your devices?

I'll start it off to give you an example:

Phone: iOS 6.1.2

Laptop: OSX Mountain Lion

Desktop: N/A

Tablet: N/A

I don't have a need for a desktop or a tablet at the moment, but if I had a home desktop and/or tablet, I'd certainly make them OSX and iOS, respectively. I love this combination of iOS and OSX because not only does it truly does unify the entire Apple experience for me (iMessage, FaceTime, Reminders, Notes - aka everything using iCloud), I feel like it seriously enhances my productivity. Though this can be emulated by other OS combinations (which I have tried), I feel like this combination has the least issues and, not to sound cliché, 'just works'.

Apparently mine quite diversePhone: android 4.1.1 (news of update)Laptop: windows 7Desktop: N/ATablet: iPad 1I use my laptop and phone mostly. The ipad is now just for some games that I have been playing for more than 2 years. Windows 7 is cause I got my laptop just before the they announce a cheaper price for windows 8 if you got your computer after a certain date. Haven't found a reason to upgrade it yet. phone is mainly due to me using android previously thus continue to use it on my phone.

iMac running snow leopard 10.6.8 (need that ppc support!!)have a MacBook with Lion installed, thinking of selling and downgrading, I REALLY dont like the lack of integration… dont understand why Apple disowned their first born, but anyway…Android phone 2.3.6 tmobile prism.. just cause it was cheap and the only suitable phone available at time of purchase (since you just CANT survive without a cellular device in this day and age.. learned the hard way) but hey, cant complain.also have iPhone 4 ios6 jailbroken i just use it for wifi and music :x

Mac OS X Mountain Lion notebookiPhone 5, iOS 6.1.3iPad, iOS 6.1.3iPad Mini, iOS 6.1.3Windows 7 Core i7 DesktopAll productivity and entertainment apps are done on the Mac and iOS but there are some key audio production programs on Windows 7 I rely on, and also use it as a file server.Having the Windows machine is really more about the fact that it's a desktop than the fact that it's Windows. I find having one desktop around makes certain things like streaming media easier, plus it's pretty powerful.

Desktop 2 used to be my primary and it still has some software on it that I haven't found adequate replacements for use under Linux so it has not yet been converted. Desktop 3 is used solely for Adobe CS2 (I haven't had the need for newer features of later versions so I have not upgraded anything to do with this one). All 3 of these machines are also doing protein folding pretty much full-time. The 2 laptops are ancient and used only for testing lightweight Linux distros and for small experiments. The server is only a small machine used for web development purposes as well as some testing projects. I hope to be adding a much larger server this year as my primary file/print server. If I can swing the costs, I may also configure it as a whole-home media server. It will also be running Debian Stable.

My primary computer at the moment is a netbook running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. As soon as I get my desktop (Pentium 4 processor) up and running, I will have Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu 12.10 LTS for media/file serving and retro gaming. My cell phone is a Galaxy Note 2 running Jelly Bean 4.1.1, but will soon root and install a CyanogenMod 4.2.2 ROM. I'll need a good desktop computer for college soon, so I probably would get one with Windows 8 and dual boot with Linux Mint or Ubuntu. If it weren't for the limitations of Linux (not enough software companies and business/schools supporting it for now), I would be running all systems with some version of Linux, including my phone.

Many software titles that I need to use for school are not available for Linux. I know there are many alternatives to student types of software, but some specific titles are not available for Linux nor are there any alternatives that work well enough (MS Access) to get me through the courses. Games I'm not too worried about, though it would be nice to have more major titles to choose from. Blaming someone when the computer breaks? You kidding me? PEBCAK!

Desktop - Windows 7Laptop - Windows XP + Ubuntu 11.04Phone - Android 2.2I like Windows 7, and see no point in upgrading to Windows 8 (perhaps when I get a tablet/laptop I'll reconsider). I have an old laptop which I keep for odd jobs. XP runs well on it, and it's also convenient for the odd times when I specifically want to figure out something in XP. As for the phone, it came with the contract and is due replacement. I'm currently looking at Android replacements, ideally 4.0 or later. The iPhone is lovely, but too expensive for my fairly basic requirements, and Windows phones don't appeal to me at all, on any level.

Desktop 1 - SimplyMEPIS LinuxDesktop 2 - PCLinuxOST21 ThinkPad - antiX LinuxDell Latitude E5420 i7 Laptop - siduction LinuxI use Linux because I do not want to be locked into the Redmond and/or the Fruitco universes. I also have way more control over my computers than I ever had with Windows. MEPIS and PCLinuxOS are user friendly and easy to configure, especially when uninstalling packages. antiX and siduction I have built to my specs by starting with a Core install and adding only the apps I absolutely need. The ThinkPad flies with antiX where it barely crawled with Windows XP.
