Softpedia is good as it always tries to list software free of bloatwares(like Ccleaner without .If it exists, then it warns users about it in that page description itself. It also allows you to download beta as well as stable version of software without navigating to other page.

I use download.cnet.com. I know there are other good sites out there but I've been using this one from the very start and it hasn't failed me once thus far

I'm surprised no one mentioned: http://www.filehippo.com/ I find it quite useful.

Even my most preferred site of choice for freeware download. Also I love their update checker software to keep all my applications updated to the latest version.

http://www.majorgeeks.com is my number one place to stop (they even have the slim version of CCleaner installers, which doesn't include extra bloat installers with the actual CCleaner installer) and they test each software listed on their site. http://www.filehippo.com is another good and trusted download site, though not as extensive with titles. http://www.softpedia.com is also good with a large repository, though sometimes you have to download with caution (look at the reviews first). SourceForge is great for nice projects like VLC and many others. I do not like http://www.download.com (part of CNet) because of the bloated installers and sometimes the use of their custom downloader that must be downloaded, installed, then used to actually download the software installer you thought you were downloading! CNet isn't really that bad, but quality control isn't their strong suit (not as much as Major Geeks).

http://download.cnet.com/I trust this site after using it for many years and it includes user reviews on software which is useful as well.

Sourceforge is a grate place to download free software, but it's not particularly well organised so in my experience I generally get there only if I'm looking for something which happens to be there (in other words, I Google the package and it points me to sourceforge). In terms of a place to browse and/or search for software, free or otherwise, I tend to gravitate towards downloads.com, CNET (though I'm getting increasingly irritated with their installers), Ninite (which admittedly are more than just a depository), filehippo, softpedia and brothersoft.

If you're not looking for specific software, I'd recommend our Best Of Pages as a start. You'll find links to them in the banner above, and we outline a lot of high-quality free software – with links to downloads as well as reviews. In general I don't think there are great all-purpose sites for finding software. You don't want to limit yourself, when there's a whole Internet of possibilities. So get out there and explore.

If you are looking for free software in general I would say Sourceforgehttp://sourceforge.netMaybe CNET? http://download.cnet.com/

I agree with sourceforge, but CNET - no. Cnet has a pre-installer that adds to much crapware - sometimes you get the option to skip it, but other times you don't. I have stopped downloading from Cnet. If I find something on Cnet (via their newsletter), I download from another site. Other good sites are majorgeeks.com, softpedia.com, filehippo.com and a few others (freewarebb.com).
