Sony is currently working on a myriad of projects that will help enhance the PlayStation experience. Most recently, the company announced the testing of PlayStation Plus Video Pass.

What Is PlayStation Plus Video Pass?

PlayStation Plus Video Pass is a new Sony video service that’s currently being tested in Poland. According to Nick Maguire, Sony’s Global Head of Subscriptions, the company is presently trying to gain insight on consumer preferences and interactivity with the product in order to determine its viability.

The evaluation will reportedly go on for a year before Sony makes a determination. On the beta Video Pass service, Polish PlayStation Plus subscribers have a choice of 21 free TV shows and movies from Sony Pictures. To stream the content, Sony requires PS4 and PS5 users to install the Video Pass add-on and use their PSN credentials to log in and access the offer.

Some of the more notable movie titles included in the package as originally reported include Jumanji: The Next Level, Bloodshot, Charlie's Angels (2019), Zombieland 2: Double Tap, and Venom (2018). TV Shows include SuperMansion (seasons 1-3), Future Man (seasons 1-3), Deadly Class (seasons 1), Community (seasons 1-6), SWAT (seasons 1-2), and Lost Girl (seasons 1-5). The content will have a three-month rotation.

For Sony, conquering the movie frontier would not only bring in more revenue but also foster greater consumer loyalty. That said, the conglomerate has been divesting its video segment in recent months. In March, the company announced a discontinuation of TV shows and movie sales on PlayStation Store while citing a shift in consumer demand.

It declared August 31, 2021 as the date when media rentals and purchases on PlayStation Store would come to an end. Users who’ll have made purchases on the platform before this date will still be able to access the content using their PlayStation consoles and mobile devices.

It is unclear whether the videos on the platform will be available on PlayStation Plus Video Pass if it ever gets launched, but there are already plans to license the content to third parties. Sony Pictures UK has announced the sale of its free-to-air channels to Narrative Capital, a US media investment company.

Its main division, Sony Pictures Entertainment, also made licensing agreements with Netflix and Disney that will see its movies get featured on the two OTT platforms.

Due to such changing dynamics, we can only determine the project’s evolution over time.
