Apple has been known to raise the bar with its use of AI to enhance its users’ product experience. One of the many cool features the company recently announced is Intelligence—an innovative use of machine learning to make life more efficient and natural for iOS users.

One of the tools featured under Intelligence is Live Text. Let's take a quick look a what Live Text is and what benefits it will offer users of Apple products.

Text Detection and Copying

Live Text is an upcoming feature in Apple's operating systems that uses machine learning to detect text from images in your Photo Library, Quick Look, photos you just captured from your Camera, and even pictures on the web.

The tool allows you to interact with recognized text like regular text. You can simply drag and copy texts from images, then paste them elsewhere.

At launch, Live Text supports seven languages: English, French, simplified and traditional Chinese, Italian, German, Spanish, and Portuguese. It's usable across the Apple ecosystem, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

This interaction with text apparently goes beyond simple copying, though. Live Text can recognize websites, phone numbers, addresses, and tracking numbers. The feature allows you to look these up to get more information, or tap the link to call or get redirected to a website.

Visual Lookup

You can also use Live Text to look up information about scenes and objects, including books, art, animals, plants, and landmarks.

This feature will reduce the need to download third-party apps to recognize common plants and animals. Even better, it will likely lessen the need for you to Google a keyword. Simply snap a photo and get the information you need!

Potential Uses for Live Text

Gone are the days when people used photos for just taking pictures. Nowadays, taking a snapshot of the real world or the virtual world through screenshots has replaced jotting quick bits of relevant information, for many.

If you are the type of person who takes screenshots of notes, recipes, addresses, quotes, and phone numbers—and confess that your Photo Library is full of such snapshots— this feature will make life so much easier for you.

Simply convert them to text and transfer them to a dedicated place, like Notes, or quickly forward them to friends and family through Messages or Email. Not only will this be much more convenient, but it will become easier for you to declutter your Photos.

Students can take photos of lectures and save time jotting down so they can focus on listening to their professors. Workers can just take a photo of the whiteboard to have their brainstorming sessions written down for them.

A New Way of Taking Information

The Live Text feature is not just a quirky way to grab information. It transforms the camera on your iPhone into a more varied tool, and opens the door for greater efficiency and productivity.
