Adobe has long been the leading software for anything design related. With the introduction of new and emerging AI tools from other companies, Adobe needed to join in the AI trend to stay at the top of its game.

Despite integrating AI technology into Adobe programs, it wasn’t enough, and instead, Adobe has now announced its own generative AI.

What Is Adobe Firefly?

Adobe announced its new generative AI in March 2023, named Adobe Firefly. The imaginative name is suggestive of where this tool can take your creative ideas; if you can dream it, you can do it.

Adobe Firefly is in beta mode at the time of writing. Adobe users can join the beta mode as well as join the Adobe Discord server to learn more about this exciting AI software.

In 2022, Adobe integrated its AI Sensei features into various Adobe software, and while it helped Adobe introduce many new features, it isn’t, in itself, an AI tool for users to use. Adobe Firefly is, though.

What Can Adobe Firefly Do?

Adobe Firefly is still in beta mode, so its tools and features may change as users send their feedback. As for now, there are plenty of awesome features to get you started on this new Adobe AI adventure.

Text to Image

Like many popular AI image generators—such as Midjourney and Stable Diffusion—Adobe has added a text-to-image feature to Firefly. This is quite the game changer for the creative image giant. No longer will you need to be a skilled designer when you can, instead, type your mind’s vision into a box and generate it in seconds.

Text-to-image AI generation is popular because it’s easy. There’s a lot that can be experimented with and learned through this method. Writing a unique and precise description will land you the best results.

Generate Text Styles and Textures

Using another text-to-image generation style, this feature works to style your text. Add textures, styles, and personality to your text by writing a prompt and applying it to your words. You can turn your text into metal, bubbles, a jungle madness of leaves, or even foodstuff. Anything you can describe, you can do.

Recolor Vectors With Text Prompts

This feature isn’t quite ready to go as of the announcement date, but it will be available soon according to Adobe. Using a written prompt, you can create color variations of vector graphics you’ve created.

Recoloring graphics this way will be quick and allows you to describe your vision for a new color scheme. While recoloring vectors in programs like Illustrator isn’t too difficult without AI, it’s certain to be more detailed and faster with this added tool.

What Does the Future of Adobe Firefly Look Like?

While only Adobe really knows its future, it has suggested some features users can expect to see in future versions of Adobe Firefly.

Inpainting

Remove an area of your image or photo and use the Firefly inpainting feature to add a new image to the gap. Don’t like the shirt your model is wearing? Erase it and replace it with a shiny biker jacket instead.

This will use a text prompt to generate the replacement image, along with multiple options you can choose from to fit your image best.

Text to Vector and Text to Pattern

The future text-to-vector feature is similar to the text-to-image feature that Firefly starts with, only this one generates a full vector from your prompt. This feature will be great in Adobe Illustrator or in UX/UI design with Figma, which Adobe purchased in 2022.

The text prompts will continue with patterns as well. In Firefly’s future, you should be able to use text prompts to create all types of imagery you can already create in Adobe software.

3D to Image

Since Adobe acquired Substance 3D software, there has been an increase in 3D design features—and with the introduction of Firefly’s AI tools, 3D won’t be left out.

Adobe plans for you to take your 3D models and, using AI, add images or textures to decorate your 3D designs. A huge time saver for 3D designers.

How Will Adobe Firefly Train Its AI?

Adobe doesn’t use user content to train its AI. For the beta mode of Adobe Firefly, it will train itself based on text prompts that users use. Adobe Firefly will not train its AI on the content of Creative Cloud subscribers.

Adobe uses Adobe Stock files to train its AI. This is content owned by Adobe, therefore doesn’t invite copyright infringement when used in its AI services. There is a roadmap in the future for compensating suppliers of Adobe Stock images and files. This won’t happen until Firefly is out of beta mode, though.

Adobe Enters the Generative AI Game

It was only a matter of time before the largest creative design corporation joined the masses and adapted to AI technology. Adobe Firefly has been announced in March 2023 but remains in beta mode for the foreseeable future. It has a great future ahead, given that Adobe usually stays on top of creative technology advancements and has such a large following.

Firefly will allow you to create images faster, fix mistakes, design variations, and much more soon enough.
