If you're a FinTwit (also known as, financial Twitter) enthusiast, you might have noticed tweets with a dollar sign followed by a word or an acronym. These are called cashtags, and they are a way to reference cryptocurrencies or stocks on Twitter.Read on to learn what cashtags are, how they work, and how you can use them to find the latest prices of your favorite crypto or stock.

What Are Twitter Cashtags?

Cashtags are like hashtags, but instead of using a hash sign (#), they use a dollar sign ($). They are used to tag tweets related to a specific cryptocurrency or stock. The cashtag is usually the same as the company or asset's ticker symbol on exchanges like the NYSE.

For example, $BTC is the cashtag for Bitcoin, $ETH is the cashtag for Ethereum, and $AAPL is the cashtag for Apple. Cashtags are not case-sensitive, so you can use $btc or $Btc as well.

Twitter first introduced cashtags to its platform in 2012, allowing users to see the latest prices and news related to a particular cryptocurrency or stock. In April 2023, Twitter partnered with eToro to display real-time stock and crypto prices on a chart on the cashtag search page.

How Do Cashtags Work?

When you use a cashtag in a tweet, it becomes a clickable link that leads to a feed of tweets that include that cashtag. This is similar to how to use hashtags on the platform.

On the cashtag results page, you can see the current price, the 24-hour change, and the chart of the cryptocurrency or stock. Clicking the View on eToro button below the chart leads to the eToro website. Here you can buy and sell crypto on eToro if you want to.

You can see other tweets that use the cashtag and follow the conversation around it by scrolling down the Twitter search page.

How to Use Cashtags to Find Crypto and Stock Prices

To use cashtags to find the price of a stock or cryptocurrency, click on a cashtag in an existing tweet or type the cashtag into the search bar on Twitter. This will bring up a chart that shows the asset's current price and some basic information with a feed of tweets that include that cashtag.

If you're unsure of what cashtag a specific asset uses, use Google to search for its ticker symbol.

Some common ticker symbols include:

  • $DOGE for Dogecoin
  • $TSLA for Tesla
  • $AMZN for Amazon
  • $MSFT for Microsoft
  • $META for Meta
  • $GOOGL for Alphabet
  • $SOL for Solana
  • $XRP for Ripple

Once you have the cashtag, type it into Twitter's search bar, and you'll be able to check out the latest prices of your favorite crypto or stock. You can also use the cashtag to stay up-to-date on news and sentiment about that asset.

Some assets are noticeably missing from the list of assets supported by Twitter's hashtags. For example, you won't find a cashtag for Binance Coin ($BNB), Polkadot ($DOT), or Cosmos ($ATOM). In these cases, you can use CoinMarketCap to find the prices and related information of these assets.

Tracking Financial Assets Prices on Twitter

Cashtags are a helpful tool for tracking the performance of stocks and cryptocurrencies on Twitter. They allow users to search for and group tweets around a specific financial asset. Cashtags help you stay up-to-date on the latest news and price movements for the assets you're interested in.
