Walmart has announced its plans to acquire an Israeli-based company called Zeekit to bring its virtual fitting room technology to its online stores. Soon Walmart customers will be able to see how an item of clothing looks on them without needing to go to the brick-and-mortar store.

Walmart Is Making Online Shopping Easier and More Enjoyable

In a post on the Walmart Newsroom, the big-box retailer has unveiled its plans to acquire Zeekit: a female-founded virtual fitting room platform.

More and more people choose to buy clothes online instead of doing it the traditional way. However, when it comes to online shopping, there is always a risk for the clothing not to fit right since you don't get a chance to try it on before purchasing. And in most cases, this is the one thing that's stopping potential shoppers from buying clothes online.

The new technology acquired by Walmart should be able to help people overcome those concerns since it'll let them virtually try on the desired items of clothing.

The process of trying on clothes through the virtual fitting room should be very easy:

Customers will simply upload their picture or choose from a series of models that best represent their height, shape and skin tone to instantly see themselves in any item of clothing, mimicking the experience of trying on clothes in a store. They can even share their virtual outfits with friends for a second opinion.

According to Walmart EVP of Apparel and Private Brands Denise Incandela, customers will be able to virtually try on clothing from brands like "Free People, Champion and Levi’s Strauss, as well as a mix of exclusive brands, including private brands like Time and Tru, Terra & Sky, Wonder Nation and George, and elevated brands like ELOQUII Elements, Free Assembly, Scoop and Sofia Jeans by Sofia Vergara."

It's possible that over some time, Zeekit's technology will be used not just as a virtual dressing room but also for building virtual closets where one would have the chance to mix and match styles.

Virtual Fitting Rooms Are Becoming Mainstream

What is a better way to make shopping for clothing online more enjoyable than by implementing virtual fitting rooms to allow customers to see how the item fits them?

For many retailers, virtual fitting rooms have been a necessity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Global retail giants like Adidas and Macy's and companies like Sephora and Ulta already offer their clients such a tool.
