Why are Ni Hydride rechargeable batteries 3.6V when most circuits use 5V DC?

The voltage depends on the electrochemestry of the elements within the cell. For NiMH the nominal average output is around 1.2VIf you have a battery that says NiMH with 3.6V you simply have one that contains 3 NiMH cells (3x1.2=3.6V)
