While the Apple Watch is definitely modern technology, the wearable device features an old-school communication feature. The Walkie-Talkie app allows two Apple Watch wearers to easily communicate with each other over.

Let's take a closer look at the Walkie-Takie app and explain what you need and how to start using it.

What Is the Walkie-Talkie App on Apple Watch?

Walkie-Talkie works just like the iconic communication device, but with an Apple Watch twist.

Open the app on your Watch and select the contact you'd like to communicate with. If they're free, you can just hold the large button on the screen and talk to them using the built-in microphone.

They'll hear you in real-time over their Apple Watch's speaker and can easily respond. Just like real walkie-talkies, though, only one person can talk at a time.

You obviously wouldn't want to use the communication method for a long conversation, but it's great when you need to find someone in a crowd or for some other quick chat.

To use the Walkie-Talkie app, you'll and your friends need an Apple Watch Series 1 or later with watchOS 5.3 or later. That means you can't use the original Apple Watch.

Everyone will also need to set up FaceTime on their connected iPhone to let them make and receive calls. That said, Walkie-Talkie is also available on any Apple Watch using Family Setup without an iPhone.

To learn more about that feature, see how Family Setup lets you use an Apple Watch without an iPhone.

If your iPhone isn't with you, the feature is also available to use via Wi-Fi or a cellular signal.

Finally, both Walkie-Talkie users need to be in a country where Walkie-Talkie is supported. Take a look on Apple's website for the full list of countries.

How to Use the Walkie-Talkie App

To get started, open the Walkie-Talkie app on your Apple Watch.

You'll then need to add friends you can chat with. Do that by selecting Add Friends. Your contact list will appear, select a person to send an invitation to them.

The other person needs to approve being added to your contact list by interacting with a notification on their own Apple Watch. Until they do that, their card remains gray. When accepted, the card turns yellow.

When you're ready to start a conversation, open the Walkie-Talkie app on your Watch and select the friend you'd like to talk to. Then touch and hold the large Touch & Hold to Talk button on the screen and say your message.

When you let go of the button, the other person should hear the message on their own watch.

The other person can respond by pressing the same button on their watch screen. Use the Digital Crown to change the volume of the message as it plays back.

To make sure you're always juiced up and ready to talk, here are some great ways to save battery life on your Apple Watch.

Since there might be times you don't want to be available on Walkie-Talkie, you can easily turn the feature off. The easiest way to do that is by opening Control Center, which you can do by swiping up from the watch face screen. Then tap the Walkie-Talkie icon to disable it.

Just tap the icon again to turn the feature on again.

If you ever want to remove a person as a friend available to contact, just swipe left on their contact card on the Apple Watch app and select the X button to delete them.

You can also do this in the companion Watch app on your iPhone. From the My Watch tab, select Walkie-Talkie. Choose Edit and then use the minus (-) button to remove a contact.

Keep in Touch With the Walkie-Talkie App on Apple Watch

As you can see, the Walkie-Talkie app is a great way to easily keep in touch with other Apple Watch owners.

But an Apple Watch can help you do much more than keep in contact with friends and family. Take full advantage of an Apple WAtch by tracking your daily fitness and even your sleep habits as well.
