Pinterest has slowly evolved from a virtual personal pinboard to an online catalog for major brands in a variety of product categories. To enhance the online shopping experience for its millions of home decor shoppers, Pinterest has launched a new augmented reality feature that lets you see what pieces of furniture look like in your own home before you buy.

It's called Try On for Home Decor and you can use it with any Android or iOS phone.

How Pinterest's Try On for Home Decor Works

Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that enables users to place virtual items inside a real-world environment. Pinterest is using AR to virtually place 3D renderings of home decor products onto pictures of your living space as shot by your smartphone's camera.

You see your room on your phone's screen with the selected virtual piece of furniture appearing as if it's part of the room. You can even move the furniture around your room and rotate it in three full dimensions.

Try On for Home Decor, as Pinterest calls it, is the site's third foray into augmented reality shopping. It previously introduced the Try On feature for selected lipstick and eyeshadow products in its cosmetics section.

At present, there's no way to search specifically for Try On pins; instead, search for specific home decor items, make sure you've selected the Shop option, and look for items with the Try On (cube) icon in the top left corner.

How to Use Pinterest's Try On for Home Decor

To use Pinterest's Try On feature for home decor items, follow these steps:

  1. Locate a pin with the Try On feature, as noted by the Try On (cube) icon in the top left corner. Tap to open the pin.
  2. Tap Try In Your Space.
  3. You now see the room in front of you via your phone's camera. Point the camera to the spot where you want to see the item; make sure your room is well-lit, and you're pointing towards a wall or other flat surface.
  4. Tap the cloud of small white dots that appears on the screen.
  5. The item in the pin now appears on your phone's screen using augmented reality. Use your fingers to drag the item elsewhere in your room or pinch your fingers to rotate the item in three full dimensions.

Try On for Home Decor Makes Shopping More Lifelike

Pinterest's use of AR technology makes shopping for home decor items more lifelike. You can see exactly what a given piece of furniture will look like in your room—and even move it around your room until you find the best placement.

All you need is your smartphone camera, and you're ready to go virtual shopping.
