Firefox introduced a multiple Picture-in-Picture mode in version 86 of the browser. Thanks to this little feature, you can open multiple videos and play them simultaneously. This article explains how to use multiple picture-in-picture mode in Firefox and its uses.

How to Start Multiple Videos in Picture-in-Picture Mode

The Picture-in-Picture mode isn’t obvious at first. It is represented by a tiny icon that appears as an overlay on top of any video playing within a Firefox tab. Here’s how to activate it:

  1. Open any website with a video in the Firefox web browser.
  2. Play the video. Move the mouse over the video to display the Picture-in-Picture icon on the video.
  3. Tap on the icon to activate the Picture-in-Picture mode. The video moves to the side of the webpage.
  4. To open multiple videos, repeat the above steps on the same website or open another site on a new tab.
  5. Firefox plays the new video on top of the first one. Drag and drop it to any location to view both.

The videos play simultaneously on the screen. The main Firefox window shows a "playing" icon for all tabs with open videos. Even if you minimize Firefox, the multiple videos will continue to play on top of any other program or the desktop.

You can use the other video controls as usual to manage their playback. Click the tiny Picture-in-Picture icon (with the inward arrow) to close the Picture-in-Picture mode for a specific video.

Multiple picture-in-picture mode is available on Firefox for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Disable Picture-in-Picture in Firefox

Firefox enables Picture-in-Picture (and by its nature, multiple picture-in-picture as well) by default. There is no reason to disable Picture-in-Picture, but you can do it from settings.

  1. Open the Firefox menu by selecting the three horizontal bars on the top-right.
  2. Go to Options and scroll down to the Browsing
  3. Uncheck Enable picture-in-picture video controls.
Disable Picture-in-Picture mode in Firefox

The single screen Picture-in-Picture mode is useful on its own. A multiple Picture-in-Picture mode is a wonderful option for multitaskers. Try it when you want to keep an eye on news from different sources or lean back for live gameplay streams. Add it to the methods you already use to improve your browsing with Firefox.
