Now that electric vehicles are seemingly everywhere, it's only fitting that university campuses offer EV chargers for their students, faculty, and staff members. If mass adoption of electric vehicles is to become a reality, it's important that chargers are accessible and affordable. Installing chargers around universities is a great way to motivate students to go electric.

Let's check out the university campuses with the most EV chargers installed by ChargePoint, a company that operates one of the largest charging networks in the world. Do note, though, that there may be additional chargers on these campuses that are not operated by ChargePoint, so the total number of chargers at some of the locations listed below may be higher.

1. University of California at Davis (38 ChargePoint Spots)

It's not surprising that the university with the most ChargePoint charging spots in the US is in California, since it is the US state with the highest EV uptake. The University of California at Davis has 38 EV charging spots, which puts it at the top among US universities.

The University of California at Davis wants to support students who drive electric, and this includes building upon its charging infrastructure. UC Davis offers slower Level 1 and faster Level 2 chargers for its stations, with the Level 2 option having a time limit of four hours per session.

UC Davis' beautiful campus, with its variety of green areas, is a great place to enjoy your electric vehicle, and charging it on campus should be a breeze.

2. Towson University, Maryland (36 ChargePoint Spots)

Next up on the list is Towson University in Maryland. The university campus is a beautiful place to be with its regal brick buildings, and EV drivers are offered various perks. Not only does the university have 36 charging spots, but according to Towson University, there are also green parking permits at a discounted price available for vehicles that meet the SmartWay green vehicle criteria established by the EPA.

If your vehicle falls into this category, you can enjoy a discount on your parking permit fee. Towson University is definitely serious about its commitment to the electrification of its on-campus vehicles.

3. Santa Clara University, California (26 ChargePoint Spots)

Santa Clara University wants to prioritize greener options like carpooling and biking to campus. But it also offers free EV charging for students in order to incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles.

According to the Santa Clara University, the first four hours of charging are free for individuals with campus parking permits and $2 per hour for users without a permit. It's great to see Santa Clara University not only actively promoting the adoption of EVs, but also encouraging students to ride bikes to campus in order to completely curb emissions.

4. Western Michigan University (22 ChargePoint Spots)

Western Michigan University allows anyone to use its ChargePoint charging spots. The first two hours are charged at $0.20/kWh, and after the two-hour limit, you'll be charged $1.50/hour until the vehicle is unplugged.

The university also has a 50-kW solar panel array located at its Miller Auditorium. The array produces approximately 64.7 MWh of power each year, allowing the university to save about $7,000 each year on electricity.

Western Michigan University is leading the charge for creating green and sustainable campuses, and its EV-charging infrastructure is at the heart of this.

5. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (21 ChargePoint Spots)

MIT is one of the most renowned technical universities in the entire world, and it's great to see the prestigious institution leading the charge when it comes to EV adoption on campus. According to ChargePoint's numbers, MIT has 21 charging spots, but MIT says there's space for 128 charging EVs at the same time, so it's possible MIT has added many more chargers since the ChargePoint data was recorded (and they may have been installed by another charging network operator).

You'll have to pay through ChargePoint, though, because MIT doesn't offer free EV charging.

Top Universities Are Leading the Charge When It Comes to EV Adoption

The universities on this list are providing their students with the necessary infrastructure to support mass EV adoption on campus. This is an important first step, and many more universities will begin to follow these pioneering institutions' lead.

Zero emissions on campus is just one of the many advantages that electric vehicles boast over traditional internal combustion cars.
