Just wondering if the upgrade is going to wipe out all my Steam games, etc.

If you upgrade by downloading probably not. Windows should install and keep all of your games, documents, etc. But If you are using a disk it might. I personally would use a disk. This way if your computer crashes you can reinstall. Copy all of the files you want to an external hard drive, then install and if the files are not there. Copy them back to the computer from the Hard Drive.

Hello, I do not think you would have an issue with your steam games when you upgrade from 7 to 8. In any case, it is better to have a backup and if you want to make sure you could probably use steam mover for you games before the upgrade:http://www.ghacks.net/2010/09/03/steam-mover-automated-tool-to-move-games-and-apps-to-other-drives/Also keep in mind that if you bought the games using steam, you should have an account with them and your games should be in record there. You could re-download them in needed.

Your programs should be perfectly safe

Some programs will remain after installation but some will require that you install them again.

To sum up what I've seen so far, probably won't affect your programs, but don't upgrade. this also corresponds with my experience.

Your programs are safe if its anything like upgrading from vista to windows 7, it shouldnt alter anything but it might add free software.

Windows 7 is better than Windows 8.

If you use the upgrade option, your files and programs are preserved. But if you do the custom installation, it deletes everything.

You should not not have any problems with the upgrade but as others have stated there is no guarantee that they will be compatible (working) with Windows 8 you also may have to re-install some of them you may also come across other problems if that is the case then a full install wouls be recommended.

No probs!!All your personal files and programs will be intact without any harm although some which are not compatible may show problem until official win 8 support arrives from the developer of the respective softwares.

Even if some programs will not need installation, some are also required to reinstall.. Like the Antivirus, for example! You need to reinstall it, since every antivirus is designed for a certain operating system.. Also, if you have programs that have to do with the graphics card etc.. (Like photoshop, illustrator etc..). Even if they might work, some bugs will surely be..Also, recommended is that you work with them, and if bugs get in the way, install a win 8 version of them...

An upgrade installation usually keeps all programs and games in tact. Worst case, some of them are incompatible and won't run.Having that said you always have to consider the option that the upgrade itself fails for one reason or another leaving you with a non-bootable system. Therefor you should always do a backup of all your files and stuff beforehand. For Steam this is quite simple and even if you don't have backups you can re-download all games you have purchased or registered via Steam.https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8794-YPHV-2033

As long as you are keeping a system either 32-bit or 64-bit and not switching from one to the other, an in-place upgrade is an option.
