Don't ask me to buy a new phone. If I had money, I would have done that earlier! :)

OS is based perhaps on the chipset, if officially iPhone 2G can't be upgraded further up, then perhaps you can find modified OS on the net, then this is up to you if you want to go ahead and apply their modified custom firmware, do notice that this can put iphone end life.

Then don't ask how to perform an impossible upgrade!

Thanks for some useful observations. No public website as yet just assessing whether it's worthwhile.  As you say users may not like a change from free to paid raising the question of how to build traffic levels that make it worthwhile to launch.Micropayments - I'm really thinking pennies (nano-payments?).  I read somewhere that untapped "value" of internet content is hundreds of $Bn p/a, that people would be happy to pay pennies for good content but there's no viable mechanism.  Mobile-phone, c/card or paypal charging infrastructures impose too high an overhead.  A pay-pal-like preloaded account system could work, there are a few out there but none with the critical mass necessary to make it worthwhile to register. You might load some credit to access one item then not find anywhere else to spend the remaining balance.  In any case, the first time you encountered the system it would  interfere with the transaction flow - found what I want but now I've got a sign-up and payment mechanism - move on.  Even once signed up there's the obstacle of identifying yourself to authorise the micropayment.

The latest official firmware for the iPhone 2G is iOS 3.1.3.I don't know if it's possible to get a newer hacked version on the 2G but considering that even the 3G is said to suffer in performance with iOS4 and the risks involved in such an update I don't think it's worth it.
