Twitter users may be in for some major changes. Not only did the platform reveal a paid Super Follow feature, but it also showcased a Communities section geared towards connecting like-minded users.

Twitter Explores New Pay-to-Follow Feature

At Twitter's Analyst Day Event, the platform announced what the future of Twitter may look like. And from what the presentation showed, Twitter has a lot planned for its vast userbase.

Twitter hinted at incorporating some sort of subscription model in early February 2021, and its Analyst Day presentation only confirmed this. The platform is currently testing Super Follow, a pay-to-follow subscription service that allows users to get exclusive access to content put out by creators.

Subscribers may get access to a subscriber badge, a subscriber-only newsletter, special deals and discounts, community access, as well as other kinds of paywalled content. The potential of a paid newsletter feature doesn't come as a surprise either, as the platform recently acquired the newsletter service, Revue.

If the Super Follow feature is ever officially launched, content creators, business owners, and even publications will likely want to take advantage of this service. The feature is still a work in progress and doesn't even have a planned launch date.

From what Twitter's mock-ups show, a Super Follow subscription may cost users $4.99 per month.

Other Features That May Be Coming to Twitter

Another exciting feature that Twitter floated at Analyst Day is Communities, which is essentially an imitation of Facebook Groups.

Users will be able to explore different communities on the app, and can then join them if they've found something that aligns with their interests. Once a user joins a group, they'll get access to Tweets surrounding that specific topic.

Twitter also announced "Safety Mode," which will automatically detect and block users who harass others on the platform.

Users will be able to turn this feature on and off, which will enable the platform to automatically block and mute certain abusive users from interacting with their content for seven days. This is yet another feature that seems geared towards content creators, as it will allow them to easily filter out hateful comments and replies.

How Will Paid Features Change Twitter?

Twitter has been free since its inception, and adding paid features will certainly make the platform friendlier for content creators.

But the question is: will users really want to pay for exclusive content on Twitter? Content creators on Twitter will have to offer something very special, otherwise, a Super Follow subscription might not take off.
