TurboAnt X7 Pro

Ease of use coupled with the cost-effectiveness can make an eScooter the perfect companion for travelling to work or running small errands. It is for this reason that we're seeing eScooters around us more and more.

The TurboAnt X7 Pro retails at $549.98 at the time of writing, and represents an excellent option if you want to get around without using public transport or jumping in the car. How does it fare against its rivals in this competitive, emerging market? Let's take a closer look at this nifty ride.

What's in the Box?

When the TurboAnt X7 Pro turns up at your door, you'll get the following in the box:

  • One TurboAnt X7 Pro electric scooter
  • One battery
  • One charger
  • One M6 hex tool
  • Instruction manual
  • Warranty

And that is your lot!

Simple Set-Up

TurboAnt X7 Pro handlebar

There's barely anything to do when you unpack the scooter and related paraphernalia from the box. However, the mention of the hex tool above indicates there is some minor construction to carry out.

This is only elementary stuff though and shouldn't take you more than five minutes; all TurboAnt requires you do is fix the brake handle in place, screw the handlebar grips into position, and your X7 Pro is ready to roll.

Well, it will be once you've charged the battery to full capacity. This can take up to four hours, so be aware of this if you plan to use your scooter immediately. Also, you must charge it to full capacity or you won't get the full range of between 20-30 miles.

Once you've carried out the above, though, you're ready to carve up some asphalt.

An Innovative Design

TurboAnt X7 Pro side view

Having reviewed the original X7 last year, I was already a fan of TurboAnt's choice in terms of battery placement. The original model stored the battery literally inside the folding stem.

Now, the battery (which is larger, to deal with the higher speeds and longer mileage) is still located on the stem, but doesn't slip inside the tube. Instead, it clips into place from the rider-facing side of the stem.

The reason I like this design element is it prevents your battery from taking curb damage. Think about it; a lot of scooters have their batteries in the deck. If you hit a curb by accident, you could damage your battery irreparably. As they're not removable, this would consign your eScooter to the big skate park in the sky.

So, if I was going to recommend this scooter or one of Xiaomi's comparable devices, for example, I'd plump for this one. The removable battery also means you can double the distance you can travel, as long as you pack a spare!

Aside from that innovative design feature, the TurboAnt X7 Pro looks how you might expect a kick scooter to look.

TurboAnt X7 Pro front wheel

It is predominantly black in color. It has two pneumatic tires front and back, with the front wheel housing the 36V 350W electric motor. The rear wheel carries the disc brake, and has a manual foot brake which also acts as mudguard. You simply press this with your heel when you ride.

The brake light is also here, and flashes bright red when you pull the brake handle. There's also a recess for securing the folding stem into position when the scooter isn't in use.

The deck features a rubber, grippy surface, which will stop your feet from slipping off the scooter. To the front, above the wheel, is the folding stem, which locks in place courtesy of a sturdy hinged clip. Above this is the battery recess (and the battery if you've installed it), which you simply slot the battery into, then let it drop half an inch or so to click into place.

Just above the battery, you'll find the hook for fixing the scooter in a folded position. While the temptation to hang luggage from this handy hook might exist, one should avoid this as it will compromise the stability of the scooter. So don't.

Finally, the handlebar. This has rubber grips on either side for you to grab hold of. On the left is be the brake and a pedestrian warning bell. On the right are the throttle lever and operation buttons. Smack bang in the middle is the LCD display, which contains all your ride information.

You also have the headlight on the front of the scooter, for riding in low-light conditions. Overall, we have a very simple design with a nice touch thanks to the battery placement.

How Does the TurboAnt X7 Pro Scooter Work?

TurboAnt X7 Pro controls

Operating the scooter is an absolute breeze, with little in the way of confusing options. With this in mind, the X7 Pro would make the perfect scooter for a beginner, as it is so easy to get scooting!

To start your ride, you simply hold down the power button for a couple of seconds. This switches on the ride computer and activates the motor ready for you to set off. You can cycle through the three speed settings before and during your ride, and you do so by pressing the menu button on the control panel.

The speed settings allow for three maximum speeds; 12.5 mph, 16 mph, and 20 mph. Obviously, the lower the speed of the vehicle, the longer the battery will last. However, I prefer to whizz around at max speed, because that is the most fun.

You can choose between zero motion and kick to start. The latter means you need to start the scooter manually, by pushing it forward as you would a non-electric scooter. This engages the motor and throttle, then allowing you to power your ride with the lever.

A zero motion start means you just stand on the scooter and press the throttle lever to move off, with no physical exertion required on your part. You can alternate between these options in the P-settings menu (which stands for programmable settings, more on those shortly).

TurboAnt X7 Pro disc brake

Pressing the brake lever will, as you would expect, cause the scooter to slow down and stop. You have three brake mechanisms available here; EBS, the rear disc brake, and the rear foot brake over the back wheel. The brake lever operates the EBS and rear disc brake.

Back to the P-settings, these allow you to customize your scooter. You access these by long-pressing the power button and the menu button while the scooter is operational. They do the following:

  • P0 toggles between mph and kmph on the display
  • P1 toggles cruise control on and off
  • P2 toggles start style (zero motion or kick-to-start)
  • P3 toggles wheel size (you won't need to change this)
  • P4 toggles maximum speed, which you can set at FF (full function), 20 kmph, or 25 kmph (the p-settings display the max speed in kmph irrespective of whether you toggle to mph in P0).

To switch the effective 3W LED headlamp on, you just hold the menu button down for three seconds with the scooter switched operational. To switch it off, follow the same process.

eScooters shouldn't complicate matters, and the TurboAnt X7 Pro certainly isn't. Again, great for a first-time scooter owner as well as the more seasoned scooterist.

Does the TurboAnt X7 Pro Work Well?

TurboAnt X7 Ride Computer

It certainly does! It is easy to operate as stated above, and it does all the things it is supposed to.

TurboAnt says that you get a maximum speed of 20 mph out of your scooter, and you do. This is a nippy little device, and hurtling along at 20 mph is excellent fun, while not being dangerously fast (for some) as was the Varla Eagle One I reviewed prior to the X7 Pro.

Braking works perfectly, and you can come to a smooth, controlled stop with the foot brake, or stop much quicker by using the combination of EBS and disc brake, alongside the foot brake.

The ride is incredibly smooth, thanks to the pneumatic tires, which absorb all the minor bumps in the road to make your ride nice and buttery. This is a godsend in the absence of any actual suspension. Believe me, I also have a scooter with solid tires and no suspension, and I swear I've swallowed at least five of my teeth as the ride rattles them free of my skull. Give me pneumatic tires any day, even if there is a possibility the inner tubes might burst.

The battery lasts well, even if I ride the scooter everywhere at top speed. You get about 30 miles out of one charge according to TurboAnt; the caveat being you should use the scooter and its gears properly, with battery economy in mind.

During testing, I got about 17-20 miles total out of one charge (multiple journeys), without being economical with the battery, so I'd be happy with that. You could easily whizz to work at top speed, then just pop the battery out and charge it by your workstation using a wall socket.

I'd venture that, if you were to be economical and ride the scooter like you're supposed to, you'd easily get your 30 miles out of it. You'll just get there slower.

Literally, my only complaint (as with most devices I review) is the IP rating. This comes with an IPX4 rating, meaning it can withstand jets of water from any direction. So, going through a puddle won't kill your scooter, particularly as the battery isn't in the deck. But I'd still avoid riding in the rain.

In all, this is an excellent entry-level scooter, and you won't find many with this kind of chops for the same price.

Should You Buy the TurboAnt X7 Pro Electric Scooter?

Why the heck not? If you're in the market for one, then the TurboAnt X7 Pro makes an excellent starting point. Simple operation combined with performance makes this an excellent bargain, and definitely something to consider as an alternative to taking the bus or car.

It might be a little light on features, but so what? You don't necessarily want to mess around with apps, or multiple operations, just to actually start moving the scooter and, therefore, yourself. It is the simplicity of the X7 Pro that makes it a prime contender for your cash if you're seeking to invest in a PEV like this.
