US President Donald Trump has firmly stated that he won't extend the sale date deadline he gave to TikTok. Which means that if TikTok doesn't manage to sell its assets by September 15th, 2020, the China-owned app may face a ban in the US.

Trump's Deadline Edges Closer

President Trump threatened to ban TikTok unless it's sold to a US-based tech company. Trump alleges that the app has been siphoning data from American users, and handing it over to the Chinese government. Since then, TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, has been struggling to work out a deal with an American buyer.

President Trump's ban is set to go into effect on September 15th if TikTok doesn't come to an agreement with one of its bidders. So far, Oracle or the Walmart-Microsoft team seems to have the highest chances of acquiring the app.

Bloomberg reporters stopped Trump for a short interview as he boarded Air Force One. When asked about the TikTok deadline, Trump commented, "We'll either close up TikTok in this country for security reasons or it'll be sold." Trump also explicitly stated that "there will be no extension of the TikTok deadline."

There has been a lot of confusion surrounding TikTok's deadline. Although President Trump says the deadline is on September 15th, his executive orders say otherwise; one states that the deadline is on September 20th, and another cites mid-November.

To make the sale even more complicated, China recently tightened its export policies. The new rules put restrictions on the export of artificial intelligence, which is a technology that TikTok relies on.

It's still unclear if TikTok is close to making a sale, or if it'll even come up with a deal before the approaching deadline.

Will TikTok Meet the Deadline?

As it stands, it seems that President Trump is serious about keeping the TikTok deadline on September 15th. If TikTok doesn't speed up the deal-making process, TikTok may be banned in the US.

For now, we recommend using TikTok while you still can.
