It turns out that TikTok isn't just for dancing, lip-syncing, and silly videos after all. The short-form video platform is testing out a new section dedicated to educational how-tos.

TikTok Hints at a How-To Takeover

TikTok may have narrowly avoided a ban from US app stores (for now), but that still hasn't stopped it from rolling out new features.

A number of users noticed a new addition to TikTok's main menu: a Learn tab. The unexpected page was spotted beside the For You and Following tabs, and contained a feed of educational videos.

Unfortunately, the Learn feed still seems to be in its testing phase and has since disappeared from the app. But its brief appearance allowed users to get a sneak peek at what's to come.

Matt Navarra, social media consultant, Tweeted out a screenshot of what the tab looked like. TikTok describes the Learn tab as a place to "explore a feed of fun and informative videos across science, art, cooking, and more."

With the new tab at the top of your screen, you'll be able to quickly switch between LearnFor You, and Following. That way, when you're sick of watching the latest TikTok challenges, you can head to the Learn tab to get some much-needed enlightenment.

This isn't the first time TikTok has dabbled in educational content, and it likely won't be the last.

In May 2020, the platform introduced an education-focused initiative, #LearnOnTikTok. The initial press release on the TikTok Newsroom revealed the app's efforts to incorporate educational content on the app.

It collaborated with several experts, such as Bill Nye, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and José Andrés, to bring a range of entertaining, yet informational videos to TikTok. Talented users also frequently contribute to #LearnOnTikTok, posting their own tutorials on makeup, science, cooking, and much more.

In the same press release, TikTok also noted that it is "exploring additional ways to showcase the rich offering of instructional content that's thriving on the platform." It looks like the Learn tab is one of the moves TikTok is making to attract users to the app's vast library of educational content.

Learn Something New on TikTok

Although you might use YouTube as your go-to source for educational videos, TikTok may soon be a good place for informative content.

It might seem a bit unconventional to learn something on TikTok, but the short video format may prove helpful for learning quick life hacks. There's no word on when the Learn page will be officially released, but it'll be interesting to see the kind of content users create for this tab.
