TikTok is forming the European Safety Advisory Council in an attempt to alleviate the EU's concerns over child safety issues on TikTok. The Council will be comprised of nine members, all of whom specialize in a different area of child safety.

The European Safety Advisory Council Will Help TikTok Moderate Content

TikTok has fallen under heavy criticism in Europe. Italy limited access to the app after a young girl passed away while attempting a TikTok challenge. Shortly thereafter, the European Consumer Organization (BEUC) released a scathing report that claimed TikTok doesn't do enough to protect children on the app.

A post on the TikTok newsroom revealed that the Chinese-owned app is trying to do more to appease critics in the EU. It has established the European Safety Advisory Council to help guide TikTok's content moderation practices.

The platform noted that the group will assist in "developing forward-looking policies" to address current issues on the platform, and will also "identify emerging issues" that may affect TikTok going forward.

All nine members of the council have professional backgrounds in areas that can help promote child safety. While some are experts in mental health, others specialize in anti-bullying, addiction, and child abuse support.

Will This Repair TikTok's Image in the EU?

Although TikTok has established a Council geared towards child safety, it might be too late to repair its previously shattered reputation. The EU has already launched probes to investigate TikTok's potential violations of GDPR laws. And while TikTok is clearly open to addressing any issues, will it be enough for concerned parents and regulators?
