Nothing has given us our first look at its much-discussed debut Android device a month before it launches in full. It confirms the speculation that it will feature a "transparent" design showcasing the internal elements of the phone, although you can decide for yourself whether it's worth all the hype. The image has been released on Twitter by Nothing founder Carl Pei, ahead of the launch on July 12.

The Nothing Phone (1)'s Transparent Design

Nothing has been hyping up the design of its phone in the run-up to the launch. The company had previously stated that it would continue to use the transparent design that was seen on its debut product, the Nothing ear (1), while also bringing in inspiration from a New York subway map.

And that's kind of how it has turned out, although whether it's quite the leap forward in design that we were promised is questionable.

It isn't clear exactly what we're looking at on the back, whether it's clear glass showing metal panels beneath, or if it's a more solid white back cover with a design based on the layout of the internal components. Either way, the components aren't fully exposed in the way that many might have expected, barring a few screws here and there.

The result is a distinctive but fairly understated design built around lines and shapes. There are LEDs as well, apparently, although we'll no doubt have to wait a little longer before the company shows those off.

The image also reveals a dual-camera setup in the top left corner, which is distinctly iPhone-esque in its design and is somewhat smaller than we're becoming accustomed to seeing on the best Android phone cameras. Little is known about the camera so far—some rumors have suggested it will have a 50MP main snapper—and the fact that it hasn't featured in Nothing's hype maybe suggests we shouldn't expect anything too spectacular on that front.

What we do know about the phone is that it will be powered by a Qualcomm processor (thought to be the new Snapdragon 7 Gen 1), support wireless charging, and will run a near-stock version of Android named Nothing OS.

Nothing Phone (1) Launches in July

Nothing has been following the strategy Carl Pei built for his former company OnePlus when that launched its first phone in 2014—a constant drip-feed of information designed to generate hype among enthusiasts.

Of course, the more promises you make, the more you have to live up to, and it's fair to say that online reaction to the reveal of the Nothing Phone (1) has been mixed. The device will be unveiled officially on July 12, and then we'll be able to see if it can live up to the expectations it has built.
