Telegram has seen a surge of WhatsApp deserters following the announcement of WhatsApp's new privacy policy. Because of this, Telegram is making a specific tool to help users import their WhatsApp chat histories.

Telegram Accommodates Horde of Former WhatsApp Users

WhatsApp's new privacy policy sparked outrage among users, as it contained a condition that forces users to share data with Facebook. Although WhatsApp delayed the launch of this policy due to "confusion" and "misinformation," tons of users dropped WhatsApp for alternatives like Telegram and Signal.

To accommodate the influx of WhatsApp users, Telegram is making it even easier for users to import chat history from WhatsApp. Now, users on Android and iOS will now be able to import their conversation histories in just a few taps.

Telegram outlines the full migration instructions in a post on the Telegram Blog, and notes that the app saw 100 million new users in January 2021 alone. The majority of these people were likely former WhatsApp users.

Will WhatsApp Ever Recover Its Lost Users?

Alternative secure messaging apps are quickly outpacing WhatsApp. WhatsApp lost a huge number of users following its privacy policy announcement, and it doesn't seem like they'll return. Many of its users feel rightfully betrayed, and would probably rather use an app with no connection to Facebook whatsoever.
