Whether you love them or loathe them, ridesharing services are here to stay. So much so that you don't even need the Uber app to hail an Uber any more. Instead, you can simply hail a ride from within Google Maps.

In March 2016, Google Maps added a dedicated tab for ride services. This meant that whenever you searched for directions in Google Maps, you'd see ridesharing options alongside the walking, biking, and public transport options.

Now, Google Maps has updated this element in order to make it even more useful to users looking for a ride. Where the app used to display a long list of possible pickups, it will now display a host of different options, alongside actionable information.

A range of ridesharing services are featured, including Uber, Lyft, Hailo, and Gett. Once you click the ridesharing tab you'll see which services have cars in the area, and the price you can expect to pay to get from your current location to the location you searched for.

Uber Enjoys Special Treatment

Uber has forged a special partnership with Google, which means that you can now "book, complete and pay for an Uber ride without ever leaving Google Maps". You don't even need to have the Uber app installed on your phone, as you just sign into your existing Uber account instead.

It probably still makes more sense to actually use the Uber app for this, but having the option to do it all within Google Maps isn't a bad thing. Especially as Uber now tracks you even after you have completed your journey. Sadly, Google Maps doesn't let you tip your Uber driver.

This new Google Maps update is starting to roll out today on Android and on iOS.
