Facebook Messenger Icons and Symbols: What Do They Mean?

Dan Price Updated 20-03-2020

The many icons and symbols used across Facebook Messenger can be pretty confusing. So, what do they all mean? In this article we’ll explain what all of the Facebook Messenger icons and symbols mean.

What Do the Symbols Mean on Facebook Messenger?

We’ve researched the most common icons and symbols on Facebook Messenger to find out what purpose they serve. Here’s everything you need to know.

1. Facebook Messenger Icon: Open Blue Circle

facebook checkmark sending

The open blue circle Facebook Messenger icon means that your message is currently sending.

It’s best if you don’t navigate away from the message while the open blue circle is present as you may risk losing your message if you exit before it is fully sent.

2. Facebook Messenger Icon: Open Blue Circle + Checkmark

facebook checkmark sent

The open blue circle with a checkmark means that your message has been sent.

At this point, you should be able to navigate away from the message without any worries, but the person you are sending the message to may not be able to see it yet.

3. Facebook Messenger Icon: Filled Blue Circle + Check

facebook checkmark blue delivered

A filled blue circle with a checkmark means that your message has been delivered.

While the person may not have seen your message yet, you can be confident that it’ll be available to them whenever they next check their phone, tablet, or computer.

4. Facebook Messenger Icon: Red Triangle + Exclamation

facebook checkmark red failed

A red triangle with an exclamation point should only appear if your message is not sent due to an internet connection outage. It is arguably the least common Messenger symbol.

A message should appear alongside the red triangle that says “This message didn’t send. Check your internet connection and click to try again.” Avoid navigating away from the page until your internet connection is working, or save a copy of your message offline to ensure your information is not lost.

How to Know If Someone Saw Your Facebook Message

If someone has seen your Facebook message on the Messenger app, a small, circular version of their profile picture should appear underneath the last message they read.

You’ll also see the word “Seen” displayed under a message that has been read, along with a timestamp to let you know when the recipient opened it.

How to Hide That You’ve Read a Facebook Message

Facebook has a feature that allows you to mark messages as unread, which has led many people to think that they can read a message without the sender knowing it has been read. Unfortunately, Facebook’s Mark as Unread option is just an inbox sorting tool and won’t retract the read receipt.

Aside from using third-party add-ons in browsers, the only way to avoid someone knowing you’ve seen their message is to not open it.

Can Strangers Send You Messages on Facebook?

Facebook has also made changes to the way that strangers can send you a message. Now, if someone you don’t know wants to contact you, three things will happen:

  1. You will receive a notification that you have a message request.
  2. You will have the option to either Ignore or Accept the message after reading it.
  3. A notification will remain on Messenger to let you know that you are not friends with the other person in the message.

What Is a Message Request?

A message request is a notification that you receive if someone you are not friends with sends you a message on Facebook.

This is an update from older versions of Facebook Messenger where messages from non-friends would be sorted into the Other folder in your Messenger inbox.

How to Delete Facebook Messages

delete facebook chat

There are four different ways to hide or delete messages on Facebook:

  1. Archiving a conversation will move it out of your Inbox and into the Archived folder. The action is reversible.
  2. Deleting a conversation will delete every message ever sent from your inbox, but not from the other person’s inbox. This is non-reversible.
  3. Deleting Messages will allow you to select specific messages to permanently delete from your inbox, but not from the other person’s inbox.
  4. Blocking Messages will prevent another person in the conversation from sending you any further messages. This action is reversible.

It’s also important to know that you can appear offline on Facebook How You Can Appear Offline on Facebook and Messenger Sometimes you might want to be invisible on Facebook. We'll explain how to appear offline on Facebook and Messenger. Read More or block someone from sending you messages without blocking them completely. This is a great workaround for awkward social media situations.

How to Use Messenger Without Facebook

While Messenger was originally intended for use on the Facebook platform itself, it can now operate independently from Facebook as long as you provide the app with your mobile phone number.

What Can You Add to Your Facebook Messages?

If you don’t want to download external apps, Facebook Messenger has GIFs, stickers, and voice recording features that can help you dazzle your friends.

The icon at the top right corner on messenger that has an i with a circle around it, I know it’s details for that person but if that appears does that mean that account is active because on some accounts it doesn’t appear and I would assume they are not active.

I am being harassed by people whom I have blocked and they have blocked me. Yet they can still send me hateful messages to my message page with a red alert icon. In order for me to have access to "hide" them I have clicked on their name. I have not read the message yet the first five words does appear. First, how do I stop this? Second, will it appear to them that I have read the message?

How do I further block them from messaging and harassing me?

Regarding a message sent, the open white circle with blue ??. What does this imply? What circumstances is “sent” shown (or why isn’t it delivered?)? Does the person you sent message to have you hidden, or their phone is off? Is muted the same as hidden. How do you hide/unhide ?
    Thanks!! Donna

Lets say someone has an account that shows nothing but a profile pic. When I look at their profile through my phone, there is a gray dot next to friends. When I am on my computer, there is not. The last time this happened, when I clicked the friends link it showed people the person was following. The person unfollowed them, the dot went away, now the dot is back but I cant see any following or friends.

Hi, in your article above, youstate tgat a circle with only. Check mark in it may mean that "the person you are sending the message to may not be able to see it yet." I have thses with several nonfriends whom I have attempted to contact through Messenger, however, instead if disappearing or chNging, they remain just the blue check mark in the cirkke and tgere is no response; can this also mean the intended recipient has blocked messages from all nonfriends or those outside of specifically-designated friend/senders? Can it mean that the intended recipient has seen but chosen to ignore the message? __Is it possible to tell whether they have seen/read the message if the circle does not change to the filled-in blue that indicates "the message has been delivered"?__ Why would the message remain undelivered indefinitely? Wouldn't one eventually receive an infication that the message _was indeed_ delivered whether ignored or not? Again, the circles below my messages sent to nonfriends (to, indeed, propose initiation of friendly interaction) remain as _undelivered_ indefinitely; what does this mean? Thank you, kindly.

I just joined Messenger. My old college roommate noticed I was on it and he sent a message welcoming me on the site. He has a small round picture of himself that appears on the right to ID that it is him. That was fine while I was on Messenger but when I try to shut down Messenger when I go to another app, his picture continues to appear on the screen on the far righthand side. When I read e-mail, or view internet content, his picture continues to appear on the far righthand side of my screen. If I press it, Messenger starts up again and I could call him if I wanted to (but I don't want to talk to him constantly).
I have interacted with a couple of other friends on Messenger and, while they have small circle's with their pictures in them to ID who they are, their pictures do not follow me when I shut down Messenger. How do I get his picture (is it called a "sticker"?) to disappear unless I want to see it.

When I log on to FB, on the right hand of my screen is a list of friends that I normally have contact with via the Messenger. What does it mean when a message is read, then the person has blocked you and the messages then show like they've only been sent( circle with check)? Have they deleted the conversation on their end? It was initially read.

I was doing something on my guys phone (that he asked me to) and a message popped up (just the chat head, normal with persons pic) when I touched it to move it, there was a hidden grey chat head (no picture, just solid grey) behind the one that popped up... Why and what was it?

Hi! Just curious if you know what a blue shaded symbol (kinda looks like a sideways, flattened figure 8) below a sender's profile pic. This is visible while I'm on Messenger on my iPhone (not sure about computer or other mobile devices). I took a screen shot if my description leaves you perplexed. Lol!

    Thanks in advance!

About the blue ring (not the solid blue but the ring) with check mark in it: Why can't the receiver see it yet? I get it that the message was sent but WHY wouldn't the person be able to see it?
I've tried locating this answer in the web but no answer yet...

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 6, 2017 at 4:20 pm

Hi Virginia - sometimes this is used if a) the person doesn't have messenger or are currently offline from their messenger (and so you are sending it to their Facebook account only) or b) if you aren't friends with them and they have chosen to not "accept" your message request. It looks like sometimes it can also happen as a glitch. Hope this helps!

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 6, 2017 at 4:19 pm

Hi Zoe - you can generally assume that it will be delivered to them, but it will go into their "other" inbox. They can then choose whether or not they want to receive the message. If they do choose to receive it it will turn into the received symbol. If not, it will remain as "sent"

    April 23, 2017 at 8:02 am

Hi I would like to know if you have the blue circle with the white behind it with the blue check and it says sent could that person secretly be reading my messages without it showing read? Could he have hid the messages and still be reading them? Is that why it is left on sent?

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 30, 2017 at 7:41 pm

Hi Marcy - I can't think of an easy way for that to happen unless you are not currently friends with that person on facebook. If you aren't Facebook friends, it is possible they are choosing to not accept your messages. Otherwise, I think it's quite likely it's just a glitch on Facebook's end.

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 30, 2017 at 7:39 pm

      Hi Rose,
This may mean that the person has not been using Messenger as an app and hasn't checked Facebook in a while. It may also be a glitch! If you know the person well, you could double check with them using a different method of communication. Sorry I can't give you a better answer!

    • Briallyn Smith
      March 9, 2017 at 3:10 am

I see a White icon with blue checkmark (before it was filled blue and now at all my previous messages I see White icon as well, before it was blue). We are not friends on facebook. And what is the difference between these two features?
Or maybe he just deleted the whole conversation with me? And getting just the requests now?

    • Briallyn Smith
      March 9, 2017 at 3:10 am

Hi Oga - it sounds like it's possible he's just receiving requests at this point in time and hasn't chosen to accept them yet. Sorry - I can imagine that that is frustrating! If you were blocked, you would receive a notice telling you so when you tried to send a message to the person.

I am messaging someone who is not my friend on Facebook... I know the reply you get when you are blocked by someone (This person is not receiving messages...). Is it possible if the message delivery icon is an open white circle with a blue tick, that you have been muted? I'm just wondering under what circumstances when messaging a non-friend would the message be open circle, blue tick instead of the "delivered" notif. of solid blue circle, white tick (Keep in mind the messages were sent minutes apart)... First message delivered, next one open circle, blue tick. Thanks!!

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 15, 2017 at 7:12 pm

Hi Renee – yes, if the checkmark has not switched to "delivered", it's quite possible that the person has chose not to continue receiving messages from you. As a disclaimer, though, Messenger does have several glitches and it is also possible that this is a glitch. I hope everything gets worked out!

      • Oga
        March 1, 2017 at 12:27 am

That happened to me as well :( First I got notification on my messager that my message request was accepted (that means that it was read, isn't it?), and all my messages got the filled blue with white checkmark at the same time. I was very happy, but after I send the last one it was again with open circle, blue tick and ALL my messages again with open circle.... What does it mean - the person muted me or turned off the chat with me. Or he just deleted the whole conversation and just getting requests again? (he is not my friend on fb)

  112. Penny Hart

I know they read message but now on some messages the little picture of them are gone what does that mean

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 8, 2017 at 11:50 pm

Hi Penny - the little pictures tend to only appear in group messages, otherwise you will likely just see a checkmark. Are the pictures not appearing in group messages?

    January 19, 2017 at 6:53 pm

What could be causing my messages to be sent but not delivered? The blue circle with the check mark recently stopped going solid blue and I need to fix this.

If I message someone who is not my friend and I get a open circle with a check that means it's delivered. Is it possible he can read it and not let me know he read it with the message request process? If he declines the request, does it remain a open circle or become a blue circle with a check?

    • Briallyn Smith

What does a purple circle mean beside a face book friend in messenger ?

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 8, 2017 at 11:43 pm

Hi Annie - sometimes Facebook friends will have a blue "lightning bolt" in a circle in the bottom of their picture to show that they are using the messenger app, and not just the web service.

  116. LnaC
    January 9, 2017 at 12:25 pm

If a one off messege was 'delivered' (that is, dark blue circle with tick) a receiver who is not my friend on fb and they have messenger on their phone, will they still be able to read the 'whole' message before they even accept or decline the message, or only part of the message?

    • Unknown
      January 10, 2017 at 12:39 pm

They will able to read the whole message without you being able to see that they have read it. Only if they decide they want to reply will you know that they have read it.

      • Briallyn Smith
        February 8, 2017 at 11:42 pm

Thanks for answering this one for me, unknown! They are correct - you won't know if a message to a non-friend has been read unless they decide to accept your message request.

  117. LC
    January 9, 2017 at 12:20 pm

If a message is 'delivered' ( that is, shown with dark blue circle) to a receiver who has Messenger on their phone, BEFORE they even accept or decline, can the receiver read the 'whole' message (and after when they receive a message request) or just parts?

    • Unknown
      January 10, 2017 at 12:41 pm

They can click on it and read the whole thing like they normally do but it won't show you that it is read until they reply or decide to accept the message request

  118. Ann
    January 3, 2017 at 1:07 am

My best friend insists that he hadn't yet read messages, but when viewed from my laptop throughout the day there were indeed 'seen' timestamps. He tells me there are several ways a message can be marked as having been read even though it has not. I believe he uses messenger from his phone, but I didn't think he had a smartphone; maybe he was using fb from a laptop. Honesty is being questioned, feeling are hurt. Can you please help sort this out? Thanks for your time, Briallyn.

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 8, 2017 at 11:41 pm

Hi Ann, I wish I could be definitive about this – there are definitely occasional glitches where Facebook will indicate something has been seen, but it's unlikely to happen all the time. If he was using it from the web app, it might be popping up in the background and being marked as 'seen' that way. I'm sorry for my delayed response (this slipped by in the holiday rush), and I hope your friendship has been mended - it's so hard when technology that is supposed to make communication easier actually leads to more questions :(

Hi, I just want to let you know I got a message request yesterday from somebody who isn't my Facebook friend, and I got a push notification from Messenger for the message request, and I also got a notification on the Facebook website for the message request, so the notifications for message requests appear to be working again. However, I didn't know the sender of the messsge, so I declined the message request.

What does a black circle with a check inside mean on FB messenger

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 8, 2017 at 11:38 pm

Hi Janet, I would assume that this is a black and white version of the grey circle with a checkmark - so your message has been sent, but not yet delivers.

  123. Brian Sipler
    December 4, 2016 at 6:51 pm

Hi, I'm sorry for the delay in responding, I've tried deleting and reinstalling Messenger several times, and I always get push notifications from Messenger for messages from my Facebook friends, but I usually don't get push notifications from Messenger for messsge requests when I get a message from people who aren't my Facebook friend. I talked to other people about this, and they have the same problem, and they think it's a glitch, so I'm not going to worry about it anymore.

Hi Jo - It's unlikely that you'll be able to figure this out. If the message stays on 'unread' for a long time, you can probably assume it's being ignored. Otherwise, it's all kind of a mystery!

Hi Cindy – if you're blocked you'll receive a message that says "this person is not receiving messages from you right now" – I wouldn't worry about the circle situation for this one – it's likely it's just a glitch because he's using a flip phone!

Hi Hide – it's possible your friend occasionally logs out of or deletes their Messenger app  – this will make the lightning symbol into he grey f (to show that they're primarily accessing their messages through the Facebook website)

Messenger sends yet does not deliver my mail to certain folks...I have no other way to reach this old friend, yet it only shows 'sent' not 'delivered ' :(

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:34 pm

Hi Doreen – it's possible your friend has not logged in for a while and that is why they are not turning in to "delivered" – I hope they see your messages soon!!

I searched people on messenger. They are on my
Messenger in those little circles. Some are people I don't know or talk to. I would like to erase them. But how?

I've been chatting with a friend on messenger for months, yesterday when I sent a message I didn't get a response and noticed his picture had a grey circle with a f in it, while everyone elses had a blue circle with a lightning stumble in it. Why would his picture with the circle change from blue to grey overnight?

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:34 pm

Hi Jodie – this is likely because your friend deleted his Messenger app – you should still be able to reach him through Facebook messages though :)

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:33 pm

Hi Marie – unfortunately, I don't think that's possible at this time – Thankfully, you should be the only one who's able to see it! (If there's something specific you're trying to hide, try doing a bunch of nonsense searches to push it far back)

How can you tell if a friend has blocked you on messenger , or if that person phone offline , no green dot ? Thankyou

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:30 pm

Hi Phil – if someone has blocked you on Messenger when you try to send a message you'll receive a notification that says "so-and-so is not receiving messages from you at this time"

I have an issue with the 'find phone contacts'
There is constantly a red circle with a number 1 inside, both on the people option and find phone contacts option! It's bugging the granny out of me. Please help me remove this. Cheers

My message on messenger log shows their pic in the circle so I know they read ? But on my fon list beside their name it now shows a symbol like a megaphone with a line through it? Does it mean they blocked me from messenger or exactly what does it mean have never seen it before?? TY

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:28 pm

Hi Latisha – is it possible that you've turned notifications for that conversation off? From my research, I believe that that's what the symbol means!

What are all meanings for video call and voice calls. Like when there lit or not and the circle

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 3:17 pm

Hi John – I believe when the icon is lit it's because the other person is active on Messenger as well - letting you know that they're theoretically available to talk right away :)

  143. Missy

When I get a message the white messenger icon shows up at the top of my phone. What does the black messenger icon mean? Sometimes I have both.

    • Briallyn Smith

Hi Missy – Do you mean within the app itself? Or on the banner of your phone?

  144. Carol Fullerton
    October 1, 2016 at 6:41 pm

On my android phone under the profile picture, I can see who liked the photo. There is also the word share with an arrow. It's on the opposite side that you would find the share icon indicating the photo has been shared. How can i find out who the recipient of the shared photo was?

    • Briallyn Smith
      October 12, 2016 at 7:14 pm

Hi Carol - are you talking about a message or a post? Your message shouldn't be able to be shared like that, but anything you post on Facebook that allows shares (generally if your post's privacy to "public") can be shared to your friends' timelines as well.

When I send a message on Facebook to a few individuals there is a solid gray dot with a white check mark in the gray circle, while others have a solid blue circle with a white check mark in them. What does this mean?

    • Briallyn Smith
      October 12, 2016 at 7:12 pm

Hi Aaron – my guess is that this might be a difference between sending a message to someone who uses Messenger and someone who does not – would that line up with your experiences?

I have the messenger app and it worked fine before but now I o Lynn come up with the fb sign(f) not the blue line for being on messenger? How can I fix it?

    • Briallyn Smith
      October 12, 2016 at 7:11 pm

Hi Patty - have you been having any other difficulties with messenger? If someone else has deleted messenger, you should still be able to access them the same way (it will just go to their Facebook account, and not the messenger app!)

    • Briallyn Smith

Hi Kay – I think the profile pictures are used primarily in group chats. Has that been your experience?

  149. Tammy
    September 24, 2016 at 12:43 am

Some of my messages that show read, show "seen" with the time they were read, and some of them just show "seen". Do you know why this is?

    • Briallyn Smith
      October 12, 2016 at 7:08 pm

Hi Tammy – I wish I did for sure – my best guess is that the "seen" shows up if you're actively on the message at the same time (and so you see when they've read the message) whereas the time stamp appears if you aren't actively looking at the message when they see it.

Then, I deleted it because I found out he was married, and didn't want to be a home wrecker...will he eventually still get the message?

    • Briallyn Smith
      October 12, 2016 at 7:07 pm

    • Briallyn Smith
      October 12, 2016 at 7:05 pm

Hi Dawn - That tends to happen most often in group messages, and it just lets you know that that was the last message your friend saw :) Helps to keep track of who has said what in a message!

      • Briallyn Smith
        November 25, 2016 at 3:11 pm

Hi Kim – sorry for the delay in my comment! I think it's unlikely that you are being videotaped, but if you're very concerned about that I would take your phone in to the store and have them double check :)

          November 25, 2016 at 3:10 pm

A friend sent me a message and it had a straight arrow pointed upward inside of a box next to it. It only appeared on that one message, not any of the others. When I clicked it, it gave me the option to forward it. Why would the forwarding icon appear next to one message? Does that mean they forwarded me that message?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:41 pm

Hi Heather - that's so interesting! Was the message she sent you a link or a photo/video? sometimes those messages will have share features embedded in them.

Hi, I have Facebook Messenger on my iPhone 5s, and I used to get push notifications from Messenger for both messages from friends and for new message requests when people who aren't my Facebook friends messaged me. However, back in May, I suddenly stopped getting any push notifications from Messenger for all new message requests. I'm talking about the normal message requests in Messenger, not the filtered message requests. Did Facebook disable push notifications from Messenger for new message requests?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:39 pm

Hi Brian - I received a push notification from Messenger about a non-friend message request last week, so I don't think it's an across-the-board disabling of that feature - it is strange that that's happened though! Have you received many message requests since then? Are the notifications still showing up on your browser?

      • Brian
        October 7, 2016 at 3:24 pm

Hi, I've gotten a few message requests since then, but no push notifications on my phone from Messenger for any of those message requests. I also don't get notifications on the Web version of Facebook for message requests anymore. When you say you got a push notification recently from Messenger for a message request, do you mean that you got a notification on your phone itself?

        • Briallyn Smith
          November 25, 2016 at 3:05 pm

Sorry again for this huge delay, Brian – I have received push notifications for a message notification on my browser within the past 2 weeks, and on my phone as well – have you tried uninstalling and re-installing the app?

  164. Laurie
    August 22, 2016 at 2:36 am

I sent a message and it had been read. However, now it went from being read to have the blue filled circle with the check. Why is that?

    • Moja
      August 22, 2016 at 4:40 am

Because the recipient either made it "marked as unread" or deleted the conversation thread.

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:37 pm

Hi Laurie - the other user changing their message to "unread" shouldn't affect your circle (just their inbox). However, Messenger is notoriously super glitchy with this, so unfortunately I would just chalk it up to being a glitch

  165. Yellow
    August 19, 2016 at 11:47 pm

If I send a message to someone who is not my friend but I have many mutual friends with, it's still likely that it will go to the other folder. If my message is in the other folder, what is the "highest" icon I'll see until it's accepted? Sent? Delivered?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:36 pm

Hi Yellow - if you send a message to this person it is most likely that they will receive a notification telling them that they've received a message request (and they then choose whether they are going to accept it or not). The "highest" icon you're likely to see is either delivered -although many other users in the comment sections have had frustrating experiences with this system.

  166. Elizabeth
    August 14, 2016 at 10:19 pm

If you send a message and on you side you see the grey circle with the grey check, but on the conversation you see the blue circle with the blue check does that mean it was sent to the server, but not delivered yet. Could it be because the person you are sending it to has a bad wifi signal, or have they blocked you?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:34 pm

Hi Elizabeth - if you've been blocked by someone, you'll actually get a message telling you that they "aren't receiving messages from you right now" - so don't worry, it's not that :) It is possible that they don't have a good signal right now for sure, or that their phone isn't on, or any other number of things :)

  167. Lauren
    August 10, 2016 at 11:42 pm

I've had one message that I sent to someone who I am not connected to and over the last almost 3 weeks it has gone through all the message statuses. When it was first sent it had the white circle with the blue check and said "Sent" then it had the persons profile picture and said "Seen" for a few days and then it went back to the white circle with the blue check and saying it was "Sent" and now suddenly it has the blue circle with the white check and says "Delivered". I also never got any kind of notification saying that they accepted the message request. So I'm not really sure what's going on. I do know that they have seen it though, I just don't know if they marked it as unread (or if that affects how the message looks on my end) or if all of this is some kind of glitch with facebook.

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:34 pm

Hi Lauren - I think the safest thing to assume is that they didn't accept your message request but likely did read the message. Facebook has had a number of glitches with this system (this comment section is full of them!) and it's really unfortunate - it makes it so confusing!

I'm curious why my messages are only showing as sent and not delivered to someone who i actively online. If they are online and connected to messenger shouldn't my message be showing as delivered as well?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:32 pm

Hi Alex- that's strange! It's possible that there's a glitch with the system in this case - I wish I could give a more specific answer, but it's hard to know when I'm not watching it happen!

      • Eddie
        October 3, 2016 at 12:52 pm

I have the same with one of my contacts. When i send a message, the sign is blue tick in blue circle even when they are showing as active, but only goes to delivered, solid blue circle when they actually open my message in their message app. Shouldn't it be showing delivered like it does with my other contacts before they actually open my message.

  171. martin
    August 1, 2016 at 11:52 pm

I sent a message to someone i am not connected to. Their small profile displayed so presumably they opened it or marked it as read. They have not replied and I have not sent another message. However, the message now shows the open blue circle with the blue tick. Any idea what has happened to cause this?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:30 pm

Hi Martin - Facebook recently changed the way you message people you aren't friends with on Facebook so that they have to "accept" a message request before corresponding with you. It's possible that they did read it, but didn't actively "accept" the request, causing Facebook to do this weird glitch.

  172. Rob
    July 31, 2016 at 11:27 pm

I have a Facebook friend who is also on my Messenger. Whenever that person posts on Facebook I get the post on my Messenger too. How do I stop that? All my Messenger contacts have a blue circle next to their name with a white swirl in the circle. The person whose Facebook posts I get on Messenger does not have that blue circle next to their name. Next to their name is a white circle with a gray f inside. That is my only contact that has that.

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:29 pm

Hi Rob - you're getting message notifications of everything they post to their profile? That's strange! • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:28 pm

Hi Bonnie - sometimes Facebook glitches, especially when someone isn't your Facebook friend. If they choose to respond then you'll likely receive a notification telling you that they've "accepted your message request"

  174. JustCurious

How do you know when a conversation is complete? Is the bubble at the bottom of the conversation? Or throughout the conversation?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:27 pm

Hi JustCurious - do you mean how do you know that the entire message has been read? In that case, yes - when the other person's profile picture is at the bottom of all the messages or there is a seen sign following your most recent message, then they have seen it all!

  175. Krystal

I've sent someone who has mutual friends but is not my friend a message. No circles popped up as they usually do but when I checked the details of message a few days later it said seen but not when. Did they actually see my message or is this another weird fb thing

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:26 pm

Hi Krystal - I know this is late, but hopefully it can help someone else if you're long past this problem :) I think you should receive a notification saying that they've "Accepted your message request" (since you aren't friends with them) if they choose to respond/if they are planning on responding. If not, it's hard to tell whether or not they've actually seen it (like you said, Facebook is just ridiculous sometimes)

  179. Jessica
    July 6, 2016 at 6:35 pm

Hi there, just wondering, if you send a non-friend a message and they choose to ignore it the symbol will stay as sent and you'll never know any different, correct? If you send them another message after they ignore the first do they get a second message request notification or is it automatically ignored or not sent since they ignored the first request?

    • Briallyn Smith
      July 19, 2016 at 10:00 pm

Hi Jessica - I'm pretty sure that they will only get the notification for the first message - but yes, you'll have no idea whether or not they've read it unless they press "accept"

What constitutes a message as having been 'seen'?.......opening Messenger when there is an awaiting message?.....does the receiver have to place their cursor in the reply box to mark it as seen? they have to touch the message to show it was seen?

    • Briallyn Smith
      July 19, 2016 at 10:02 pm

Hi Ray - for a message to be considered "seen" the person has to actively open up that conversation and see the message. (If you're on desktop, then you have to either open the chat full screen or click on the chat box)

        August 3, 2016 at 6:15 am

So on both devices (cell, desktop) The message shows a white circle with a blue check. On the desktop when I'm in messages and open it up it shows 'seen 00:00" (The same time I sent the message. What does that mean?

When a msg is seen then that is indicated by a small profile pic circle, bt sometimes it only shows "seen" when we click the sent msg, bt neither the time is shown, nor that small pic, why could it be so?

    • Briallyn Smith
      July 19, 2016 at 10:03 pm

Hi Maria - to be honest, I'm not entirely sure! I think the picture is more common in group chats or on Messenger and the "seen" is when you're having a conversation with only one person

There is a person I talk to on my phone through messenger and they use a web browser(no messenger app). Even when I know they have our conversation open, my messages always appear with the "sent" icon. It's not until they start typing that the icon changes to their fb profile picture. Rarely do I see the "delivered" icon. What does it mean if it goes straight from sent to their profile picture? I am wondering if this person can only see my messages when they have our conversation open.

    • Briallyn Smith
      July 19, 2016 at 10:03 pm

Hi Andy - if it goes straight from sent to their profile picture it means that they are online and see the message as soon as it arrives. If it stays at "sent" until they start typing they may have the chat window open but not have clicked on it until they begin typing their response.

When I archive a message I have sent then I archive the message and when I unarchive the message it shows "seen" even though the person is not online.. is it possible

    • Briallyn Smith
      July 19, 2016 at 10:04 pm

Hi Yvonne - you archiving the message only affects your side of the conversation – the other person can still see it! Hope that helps.

I used messenger to send a message to someone who is not a 'friend' and doesn't use messenger. They haven't replied. I guess it went to message requests for them. When i tap and hold on the message in messenger and then select 'details' - 'seen' and nothing else appears under the message. Does that mean they have actually seen it and just haven't replied?

      July 19, 2016 at 10:05 pm

Hi Martin - To be honest, I'm not sure whether or not that means the person has read it – I mean, it might be worth accepting it at face value, but I'm not 100% sure - there have been a few too many glitches in this comments for me to make a sure statement!

A friend of mine unfriended me on Facebook but has now messaged me on it. It has gone to my normal inbox, not my "other" folder. Since its in my normal inbox, will this person be able to see that I've read the message if I open it?

Hi Jonathan - Sorry, this is probably way too late. Yes, if it's in you normal inbox they will be able to see that you've read it. (Unless you use Messenger on your phone and turn data off before opening the message)

I just synced my contacts and most of them added from my phone have a small square to the right and if you press it, it reveals the number that contact was saved in your phone and indicates added from your phone contacts. For Two of the members it says added from my contacts but does not list any number. Any idea why? as I believe they were only in my Friends network. A third says added from my phone but does not mention phone contacts like the other two

Hello on messenger I sent a message to this person and it appeared just the clear circle with a blue check which means sent but this person haven't been online for a long time and last time I checked the message has been seen with the exact date and time I sent the message eventhough this person isn't online at the exact time I sent the message. What does it mean? Did he just seen my message for real? And when the seen thing appeared he's not been online, I didn't see him active recently. I hope you can help me.

      June 22, 2016 at 3:27 am

    • Briallyn Smith
      June 22, 2016 at 3:28 am

Hi Ledu, I think they might just be guessing - there's no way for them to know through Facebook whether or not your phone is on! (They may be watching your "last active" time on Messenger to make a guess)

      • Ledu
        June 22, 2016 at 4:32 am

Thank you, the only reason I questioned it because he asked why do you keep shutting your phone off and he isn't even a friend on my friend list has no kind of way to see if I'm active idk, but thank you I appreciate that, I too think they are just guessing now

Hi. I sent a message to a non-friend via Facebook web. Not phone. For several days nothing happened. Until on the 4th day, I saw it was "Seen" and the date and time were exactly the same when I sent it. I didn't receive a notification that the person accepted my message request. Do you think I was ignored?

    • Koutis
      June 10, 2016 at 5:59 am

Most likely yes. While the person didnt actually read the message the exact time you sent it (just a web back, you shouuld be able to see the correct time on messenger) they probably saw the message.

Hi Briallyn. I sent a message to a non-friend and it displayed the 'sent' icon for at least 10 days. I checked again after another 10 days and his profile picture was now showing at the bottom of the message (on app not on desktop). I tapped to try to see the date read and the icon reverted to 'sent' in front of my eyes. Has remained this way and no reply.
I thought that if he accepted the message request I would be informed and if he ignored it I would see no changes at all. So please could you tell me what you think happened here? Thanks.

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 24, 2016 at 10:27 am

Hi Carrie – that's a strange glitch! I think because you didn't receive a notification about him accepting your message request that it's safest to assume he has read the message but hasn't accepted it – let me know if there have been any updates since then, though!

How can a person know if they are blocked from messenger? My ex and I are having issues and messenger is a way that I can tell if he's read a message but not they're saying "sent" only?

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 24, 2016 at 10:26 am

Hi Aneice – if you are blocked from contacting someone through messenger you will receive a message that says "So and so is not currently receiving messages from you at this time" (or something along those lines) – as long as you and your ex are both still Facebook friends, even if it's saying "sent" only, he should be receiving the messages.

Trying to find out what a grey circle means? There's the "grey" circle and a "grey" circle with a grey check mark in it.

I have a friend whom we chat occasionally and I've sent her a few messages recently and she still has not received them. She's on Facebook all the time and she has messenger. I'm not understanding why the messages won't go through. But I keep seeing a gray circle with a checkmark

Hi Shchiara - I'm sorry that Facebook's being so confusing! I think it sounds like this person hasn't seen your message, but the system can definitely glitch sometimes. If you have another way of getting ahold of that person it might be worth trying that method!

I've sent the message to stranger, as I understood, stranger got a message request. At the moment message is marked as Sent. Will I receive any notificatio/circle of any colour, if my request will be ignored?

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 23, 2016 at 2:39 am

Hi Lilly - Unfortunately, Facebook doesn't send you a notification if your message is ignored – it will just stay as sent forever. If your message gets accepted you should see the circle turn to delivered and/or seen, and you will also receive a notification that they have accepted your message request. Hope that helps! :)

I have a friend who I send messages to and its been working well. Recently I don't get any circle at all to show he's received the message or that it is even sending and its always telling me to invite him even though we are friends on FB. He cant fix it, I cant fix it we have no idea what is going on. He doesn't get the messages as I have sent them and it shows he is not connected to messenger even though he is. We just cannot work this one out at all. I send a message its on the screen and literally nothing next to it and he gets nothing.

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 20, 2016 at 4:04 pm

Hi Stoula - that's incredibly strange! Are you using the Messenger app or Facebook itself? Have you both tried uninstalling and reinstalling your apps, restarting your devices, and/or restarting your connections? If none of those work, I'd definitely suggest reaching out to Messenger support - this sounds really out of the ordinary!

  204. Mark
    April 12, 2016 at 3:19 am

I know there are 3 symbols for the status of the messages u send on messenger in the shape of a round circles. Sent - which means the person hasnt received or seen the message yet. Delivered - the person has received the message in their device (notification, email, etc) but might or might not have seen it. And Seen - received and seen.

But my question is...Its logical that if a person is online, the message should immediately show "delivered".... and it usually works that way. But the problem im having is that the person appears to have been online for a long time, and yet my message only says "Sent". Why does this happen? Is it possible that the person is aware of my message?

Briallyn do you have a solution for this?

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 20, 2016 at 4:02 pm

Hi Mark - that can be tricky! It does make sense that it should immediately show delivered - it's possible the person appears to be online but is inactive, or that Facebook is glitching. Is it always happening with the same person? at similar times? Does it eventually change to delivered? I'm sorry that I can't give a better solution right now but if you provide me with a bit more information I can see what I can do!

      • Dan
        May 3, 2016 at 11:14 pm

This happens with me, too, with just one other person. The message shows "sent" in Messenger, and she's definitely online - posting stuff, etc. -- but it just stays as "sent": the open blue circle with the check mark. Eventually, she sees what I've sent, but I think it sometimes takes days for it it get the "received" symbol (solid blue circle). I don't message her all that much, but enough that it's a pattern, and just with her. Thanks for any advice on this.

Hi, I sent a message the other night to someone I am not FB friends with, and it is showing as 'sent' in messenger but on my desktop this morning it showed as seen at the time it was sent the other day but when I refreshed it, it went back to sent. It has only been 'sent' on messenger the whole time. Do you know what this means? Request not approved? Blocked?

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 8, 2016 at 7:12 pm

Hi CM - I'd trust the Messenger version right now – I've heard from others in the comments that you'll get a notification when a non-friend that you've sent a message to accepts your message request :)

      April 1, 2016 at 12:03 am

Hi Carrie - I'm sorry but I actually have no idea for this one! I know it's a low-tech option, but if your message is time sensitive I'd suggest either sending a follow-up message or contacting the person another way!

    • LC
      April 5, 2016 at 3:18 pm

I just had that exact samething happen to messages that I had sent months ago, last Tuesday they were marked as seen with the time they had been read and also had the little cicle profile picture of the person, and then last Friday(April 1st) I noticed that were back to saying sent. I had assumed that they were marked by the person as unread, but now that I know someone else had the exact same thing happen near the same time, I'm kind of thinking it might be some sort of facebook glitch, but I'm not sure. I guess it could be either, but it seems with the timing that it happened for both of us that it is more likely a glitch with facebook.

      • LC
        April 5, 2016 at 3:28 pm

I should also mention that I am not friends with the person I sent the messages to (but I do know them).I never got a confirmation that they accepted the message request but I can only assume they did since it changed from sent to seen and as far as I know it only does that if they accept it. Initially I thought they saw the messages and then marked them as unread. I couldn't find any solid proof that they did OR that it was just a glitch with facebook, but now after hearing that it happened to someone else within a couple of days of when it happened to me, it's sounding more and more like it's a glitch. I don't know for sure though.

Just wanted to give a quick update. This has now happened to another message that I sent (to someone I am friends with). So now I am almost 100% positive it's a problem with facebook and NOT that the people receiving the messages are marking them as unread. I hope this helps anyone else having this happen to them.

So i sent the message to someone who's not my friend on facebook, and it went from sent to delivered. Does that mean that they accepted message request but didnt see it and answer it yet? Or it means that they still need to accept my request ?
    Thakn you!

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 1, 2016 at 12:05 am

Hi Drizzy - when I tested this, I found that the message stayed as "sent" until I accepted it (at which point it changed to delivered) – it is possible that that has changed, however (it seems like Facebook is always tweaking these things)

So sorry for my delay in replying - I'd love to hear if you found out any more information!

      • Drizzy
        April 1, 2016 at 5:23 pm

        Thank you for the answer!

Actually i tested this by myself (i created fake facebook profile and logged in on another phone). Then i sent the message from my profile to the fake one.. It went from sent to delivered in 2 situations: first one, when i opened the request on that fake profile (not selecting accept or ignore, just opened the request); 2nd situation - if i just select ignore .

So there is a chance that person ignored me.. Or maybe is that some Androids cant show message requests.. Just like my bros phone (i got iphone).. So when he logged in via pc, he recieved notification about message request..

If they did accept my request i would get notification .. But nothing came so it is how it is :)

        Thank you anyway!

      July 23, 2016 at 3:23 pm

So it happened to me again! A message I had sent to someone I'm not friends wih after a long time of saying "sent" all of a sudden changed to "seen" on both my laptop and phone. It said it was seen at the exact date and time that it was sent and on the messenger app it showed a little circle version of their profile picture next to the message. The next day though it changed back to saying "sent". I also didn't get a notification that they accepted the message request. It's been very confusing, this is the second time this has happened to me. I know that its most likely a facebook glitch but my question is if the glitch is that it's saying it's been seen when it hasn't or if the glitch is that it goes back to saying sent and it has really been seen. I hope all of that made sense :)

What does the green circle mean next to the phone in messenger. Also when I get a message back it reads it to me in a weird voice how do I get rid of it

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 1, 2016 at 12:08 am

Hi Ann! The green circle next to the phone means that the person is online on messenger right now - so if you were to call them using Messenger, they would be available to talk!

I'm confused by the weird voice - do you have any text-to-voice software on your phone? I can't find the option on my messenger app to turn a voiceover on or off!

  210. Mary
    March 17, 2016 at 8:59 pm

Hey! Do you know what does it mean when you send a message, it shows as unread for hours, either on messager or in facebook website, so you think the other person hasn't read it yet, and then later it shows as seen in both places, and the time when it shows it was read was hours before the "seen" even showed up? There's this person I've sent a couple of messages to and the messages don't show to be seen for hours, then the "seen" shows up and the time is exactly the time when I sent the message. I don't know if it's because the message was marked as unread and later read again, showing the time when it was originally read. Thank u!

      March 31, 2016 at 9:35 pm

I am having a similar question except after it showed read last night (as the same time I sent it) it showed the person not active for days and then all the sudden yesterday showed as seen. Today it is back to showing as sent! If you found out what that means please reply :)

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 1, 2016 at 12:09 am

Hi Mary - what might be happening is that the person is reading the message while not connected to data (if your data is off when you read a message it won't send that information to the server so it will appear as unread until you check it again with your data on)

I can't be sure that that's what's happening - but if it's only happening with one person, I wonder if that might be the case!

Hope that helps a little - and I'm so sorry that it's taken me this long to reply to your comment!

Hi Janice - sorry for the delay in answering this comment!

I'm not entirely certain what you mean by your question - if you share something over messenger only the people that you have sent it to will be able to reply. However, if you receive something in a group message and reply within that group message, everyone else in the group will also be able to see your reply.

      Hope that helps! :)

Hi Jen - I had a very similar experience recently. When you check your Facebook messages through the Internet (not the app), do you see them? My messages have a blue outline circle and blue check mark but never turns blue. Just says sent not delivered. Why? Am I blocked? The messenger never rings just goes to voicemail when calling to. This person is on my friends list.

Hi Stacy - I'm not entirely sure why your messages aren't delivering, but I can promise that it isn't because you are blocked - I just tested it out, and if you are blocked a popup message will appear when you try to send a message that says "this person is not receiving your messages right now"

It's possible that your friend just hasn't connected to messenger recently so the messages haven't downloaded on their mobile – do you have their cell number or another way of contacting them to confirm whether or not they've received your messages?

I've added someone via phone number to messenger as they no longer have fb. Now when they message I don't get notification despite all setting saying notifications are turned on. I still get notification others using messenger just the one I added via phone number I don't, why?

Hi Tracy - that's unfortunate! I know these are silly fixes, but it might be worth trying to following:
      - restart your phone
      - delete and re-install messenger (and make sure you have the most recent updates)
      - toggle the notification settings and check and see if there's anything pressed within your conversation with this person that might be silencing the conversation

Hopefully one of those helps - if not, it might be worth contacting Messenger support so that they know about what sounds like a really frustrating bug!

So i sent someone a message that i was not friends with. When they havent accepted it, it goes into the others folder. If i send them another one now that we are friends will they see the other message i sent along with the new one?

Hi Danielle - I think that when they look at the new message the older one should also appear in the thread before it :) (If you can see it in your message history, they should be able to see it too!)

    Hi Briallyn
My question is If a message have been seen, can it if you log in with another phone be seen as just delivered?
I had a "friend" who just unfriended me on facebook and removed me from messenger.
When I confronted him about it, it took a couple of days before the delivered notification turned to read notification.
Today I just happened to see that the notification for that message is back to delivered although the previous messages, from when we were friends, have the read notification.

Hi Sanna - thanks so much for your comment!
It's a pretty unique situation, so I can't say that I've run into it before – I think maybe when you guys stopped being friends it may have caused a glitch with what information Messenger will actually show you about recent messages - but that's just a hypothesis on my end, I don't actually know for sure!

Sounds like you're probably better off without this "friend" anyways :)

I've sent someone I am not friends with 2 messages (one about a month and half ago and one last night) next to their name on my messenger app it has the messenger blue symbol and when i look at the info button it says Messenger under their name-- so I'm assuming they're signed on to the app. Both messages I have sent each have the blue outlined circle with the blue check in them and when i click on both of them it says Sent under them, neither of them say delivered. I have a few questions did they get 2 message requests? Also is it likely that they have seen the messages and just not accepted the message request or is it more likely that haven't seen them AND haven't accepted the message request? Also if they declined the message request would I be blocked? if that is the case I don't believe they have done that since I can still see their page and send them messages.

Thanks in advance, sorry this is so long :)

I also forgot to ask if there's a possibility that they don't know that the messages are even there

      again thanks in advance.

Hi LC - no worries about the long message :)

Just because they haven't accepted the message request doesn't mean that you're blocked.

The first message may have been sent before they started to receive notifications about messages from people they don't know (for a long time those messages would just go to an "other" folder that didn't give obvious notifications) - has anything happened since with the message you sent last night?

I hope this works out for you! In the meantime, if you have any other method of contacting this person (like an email or a phone number) that might be the best way to get this sorted out!

          February 18, 2016 at 11:32 pm

I think when the first message was sent the "other" folder was already gone, but as of just a few minutes ago both messages still just say "Sent". So I'm assuming they haven't seen either message, so they haven't done anything with the message request(s). Thanks for your help though.

Hi Jo - I'm so sorry that I just got your message now! The Valentines that Messenger was sending were normal messages that were "wrapped" in virtual pink paper - it's possible that your phone didn't display the message properly - were you able to see it when you checked through the Facebook website? Have you been able to see other messages from him recently?

I don't think he would have been able to delete it before you saw it, but it is possible that the Valentine-style wrapping didn't come through!

Hi, my question is quite similar to lava's. i just have sent a message, a photo to a contact on messenger that is not my friend on fb but he has accepted my request to be my friend on messenger and since two days ago show me only the "sent" status that's the blue circle with the blue checkmark, I'm afraid that probably doesn't change the status to 'delivered' the full blue circle or seen it because this contact has erased me from messenger and not because he doesnt use an internet connection from a device ( he is using whats app in his phone)
    1. My question, if there is a way that he never get the message in his inbox even when i can see the 'sent' status?
    2. Or maybe if it's possible that they never open the message with the messenger app and only with the traditional facebook chat in a computer with a program to unblock to send the 'seen' status I will only see the 'sent' status?
    3. Maybe was a problem sending the message?
I hope you can understand my questions

Hi Pria - thanks so much for your comment - what a confusing situation you're in!

If it's someone you feel comfortable with, the easiest thing to do may be just to send another message asking if they received the first.

Honestly, all three of the situations you suggest may have happened, and I don't know that I feel comfortable saying anything definitive - it is pretty rare for Facebook messages to fail to be delivered, but if you're anxious or the message is time sensitive then sending a follow up is likely the best way to check :) These things happen, and the person you sent the message to should understand :)

Hi, what does it mean when their mini profile picture appears at the bottom next to their own message? Does it mean that after sending their reply, they have viewed the chatbox again even if I didn't have a reply?

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 4, 2016 at 12:31 pm

Hi Wil! Don't worry - Messenger isn't quite that cryptic :)

If you see the mini profile picture in a group message, that's all of the information that you'll get about whether or not someone has seen a message.

I've also had it show up on an individual message without a time attached - but I don't think there's any additional meaning to it, it's maybe a glitch or maybe what happens when someone opens a message while you are still actively on that conversation!

Question, if a message I sent has "seen" at the bottom of it, but doesn't have a time, does that mean they opened it? Because on others I've sent, it'll say "seen", along with a time. But this one doesn't have a time, just " seen."

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 3, 2016 at 11:08 pm

Hi Katie - I know! I've seen that too, and I'm not entirely sure what the difference is (although, if it's a group message it definitely won't tell you the time!)

Even though it didn't give you the time, I think you can be pretty certain that the message has been seen :)

Thank you for your prompt reply on my previous question!
(I understand that sending to non fb friends places my msg in 'message request' folder - will they receive a notification via their FB mobile app (not mobile web browser) in case they don't typically open up their Messenger app? and will I know if they've seen/read my message? TIA)

Additionally, my fb messenger shows only the 'sent' icon which is the blue circle with blue checkmark. Shouldn't it at least show 'delivered,' or is it still possible that they've received and read my msg already and not accepted it which is why it still states 'sent' on my end? TIA

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 2, 2016 at 11:30 pm

      Not a problem :)

I think at this point it could be either that the person hasn't used a device to access the message yet (sometimes if someone doesn't have Internet/data access the message will not show as "delivered" until they do.

In this case, it may also be that you won't get any more information until they do accept your request - either way, you have done all you can and the message should get to them soon!

Hi Lava, thanks for your comment!

Yes, they should receive a notification via their mobile app alerting them to the message request :)

I'm also pretty sure that if they choose not to accept your message then you will not know that it has been seen, but if they do accept the message request then you should see whether or not they've read a message as usual :)

Hope that helped, let me know if there's anything else I can clear up for you!

What does it mean if there's no icon at all next to the message?

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 2, 2016 at 10:35 pm

Hi Matt - the main times I've seen a message without an icon is if the message is no longer the most recent message in a conversation - the icon only applies to the most recent message!

As well, if you're using Facebook in web, there should only be a checkmark with "seen" or an icon of your friend's profile picture (in a group message) visible!

      Hope that helps :)

I am unable to send or receive messages on messenger for about three days. People at the other end can see my message i send them but they can't send one to me. Please help. I have uninstalled and installed the app several times.

Hi Natasha - I'm so sorry, that sounds incredibly frustrating! Are you able to access messages through Facebook online without a problem? If you can, then I would switch to using Facebook on your phone's web browser to answer messages – I know it's frustrating, but at least people will be able to communicate with you!

Unfortunately this sounds like a problem that you might have to take up with Messenger support - I would suggest sending them an error report here:

What is the red check mark in a blue circle?

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 1, 2016 at 1:13 pm

Hi Tinin - I'm so sorry but I just saw this comment now!
I have actually never seen that symbol before, and I haven't been able to find it during a quick search online either. A blue check in a blue circle should mean that a message has been delivered, and normally if there's red involved it's an exclamation point and it means that your message could not be delivered.

      Hope that helps!

    • Briallyn Smith
      January 13, 2016 at 10:03 pm

Hi Alex! If you look under "recent" messages there should be a bar at the top that says "search for people and groups" - if you don't see it I might be able to be more help if I knew what device you are accessing Messenger on :)
