We’re guessing you’ve heard about the Ice Bucket Challenge by now. If you’re present on any social networks your feed will likely have been filled with these videos, as everyone from proud proles to prudish presidents doused themselves with water in the name of charity.
The main charity benefitting from the Ice Bucket Challenge is the ALS Association. But as the meme has travelled around the world other charities have also experienced an uplift in awareness and donations. So, despite the Ice Bucket Challenge seemingly annoying as many people as it has entertained and enlightened, it really is having a positive impact.
With each person who gets doused nominating three more people, the Ice Bucket Challenge has spread quickly. And we have now seen enough videos online that we’re able to make a list of the best so far. Enjoy it. As the people in the videos really didn’t. Because cold and wet.
We start with Barack Obama, the current President of the United States of America. Or do we?! No, sadly not. With the real Obama declining to take part, it was left to Obama impersonator Reggie Brown to fill in for him. Shame.
Patrick Stewart is far too classy to dump a bucket of ice-cold water over his head. So, in lieu of doing so, he wrote out a check to charity and used his ice bucket in the way nature intended… adding ice to a glass of malt whisky before downing it. Legend.
Simon Cowell is a very rich man, and he doesn’t want you to forget that fact. Hence, he takes part in the Ice Bucket Challenge while sunning himself on his yacht. And laughs it up while doing so. Because rich.
Paul Bissonnette may not be the biggest celebrity on our list — he’s a Canadian ice hockey player — but he did pull off the most stunning Ice Bucket Challenge dunking so far. Getting drenched from a helicopter while standing on the edge of a cliff will be hard to beat.
Oprah Winfrey keeps it nice and simple, sitting on a wall in her sweatpants and letting someone else drench her with ice-cold water. What makes this video worth watching is the scream that could probably be heard around the world.
What’s worse than having a bucket of ice-cold water dumped over your noggin? Having one slowly trickled down the back of your neck. Which is the exact fate which befell Gwen Stefani, whose blonde hair miraculously turned white when exposed to water.
Tom Hiddleston is a bit of a heartthrob, even when playing the malevolent Loki in opposition to Thor. He makes the most of this by dressing in a tight T-shirt which shows off his phenomenal physique. Which doesn’t help him when he gets a bucket of water in the face. Ha.
Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr. may be one of the coolest people in the world, but it has to be said he shirks away from the full Ice Bucket Challenge experience. Sitting in a heated swimming pool at the time makes this a lot easier, right?
I never thought I’d live long enough to see Mickey Rourke sitting in a child’s paddling pool while two grown men pour a bucket of ice-cold water over his head. But I did, and I’m grateful for having done so.
Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest directors the world has ever seen, but he normally comes across as quite serious, staid, and sober. It turns out he does have a sense of humor, even when he’s on the receiving end of a bucket of cold water.
Jack Black is funny whatever the situation, so this is an entertaining clip despite not containing anything out of the ordinary. The fun comes at the end, when Black’s son decides a supersoaker is needed to finish the job.
There are people out there who would pay top dollar to tip a bucket of water over the head of Tom Cruise. Which means he could have auctioned off the opportunity and raised an inordinate amount of money for charity. Instead, he let his crew do the deed, and they clearly enjoyed it a little too much.
George W. Bush
George W. Bush came in for a lot of criticism during his time as U.S. President. But love him or loathe him, he deserves a round of applause for taking part in the Ice Bucket Challenge. He even turns the whole thing into a comedy sketch, with wife Laura getting involved.
Verne Troyer is only small, so you would think even California would be able to spare enough water to drench him. Apparently not. So the actor uses milk instead, eating a cookie to make the whole experience more palatable.
Kermit The Frog
The Kermit The Frog Ice Bucket Challenge contains a number of firsts. He’s the first Muppet to take part, he’s the first celebrity to take part while naked, and he’s the first person to react to the dunking by lifting all four limbs off the ground simultaneously.
Chris Pratt is hot right now thanks to the success of Guardians of the Galaxy. At least he was hot until he got drowned by a bucket of water thrown over him from a balcony. Still, he retains his cool factor by downing a couple of aptly named drinks beforehand.
Conan O’Brien was never going to just do the Ice Bucket Challenge without turning it into an entertaining skit of some kind. And we weren’t disappointed. He thought he was getting paid and used fake ice to fool us, but thankfully his bucket-wielding assistant made it all worthwhile.
Jeremy Clarkson is the only celebrity on our list who seems to have had no idea he was about to get drenched in water. His kids wake him from his slumber, trick him into moving his cigarettes, and then douse him from head to foot. My one complaint? Not enough speed.
Bill Gates was always going to complicate the process of throwing a bucket of water over your own head, as doing stuff in the simplest way possible just isn’t in his nature (see Windows). The big daddy of geeks pulls it off though, and with considerable aplomb.
We have saved the best until last, with Dave Grohl roping in the rest of the Foo Fighters to turn his Ice Bucket Challenge into a pastiche of Stephen King’s Carrie. It’s all kinds of genius, and means Grohl has won the Internets. Unless you know better…
