Plex has launched a new app called Plex VR. As the name suggests this brings official support for virtual reality to Plex for the first time. Which means you can watch Plex in a virtual apartment or drive-in theater, and even invite your real friends along to share your virtual popcorn.

Most of us haven't got the space for a cinema room in our home, or the money to furnish it with a giant television set. Using a projector is one way of achieving similar results on a budget, but there's also the virtual reality option... which can turn a small screen into a big screen.

From Plevr to Plex VR

This is the thinking behind Plex VR, a new app from the bods at Plex. Plex VR has emerged from a small community project called Plevr. Having realized there's something in this virtual reality malarkey, Plex hired Alex, the guy behind Plevr, and thus, Plex VR was born.

Plex VR is an Android app for the Google Daydream platform. Daydream being the follow-up to Google Cardboard. You buy a Daydream View VR headset, place your Daydream-ready smartphone into it, and then strap it to your head. Et voila, you now have access to virtual reality apps.

Plex VR is a free app that allows you to watch your Plex Media Server videos either on your own or with friends. If you choose the co-op route, you and up to three friends can watch videos together in your virtual apartment or at a drive-in theater (the latter requires a Plex Pass).

There are some rather neat elements to Plex VR. For one, your head movements are updated in realtime so that you can see what everyone is looking at. There's also voice chat so you can annoy your friends by spoiling the end of the film you're watching. There are even potted plants.

Let's All Go to the Lobby

Plex VR looks to be a nice addition to the Plex lineup. It's not going to change the world, but it will let Plex users watch videos with friends in a virtual room that's nicer than their actual room. And the drive-in movie theater setting is something else your Plex Pass buys you.

Are you a dedicated fan of Plex? What about Google Daydream? Is Plex VR a marriage made in Heaven? Or would you have preferred Plex to support a different VR platform? Can you see the point of watching video content in virtual reality? Please let us know in the comments below!
