While many of the big nominees are still playing in theaters, there are plenty of titles you can watch right now without taking a trip to the cinema.

1. Dunkirk

A favorite to win Best Picture, Dunkirk is a historical World War II drama that tells the story of the daring operation to evacuate Allied troops trapped on a French beach during World War II. The film’s focus is on the British navy’s use of civilian boats for the mission, and a civilian family that steer their boat into dangerous waters rather than let the navy just take it.

Denzel Washington plays the part of a civil rights lawyer who finds himself thrown into a new job when his partner dies, leaving behind a firm that is broke. While the film suffers from plenty of inconsistencies and a lack of direction, Washington’s performance in Roman J. Israel, Esq is the one thing critics have agreed on in a film that has received mixed reviews. It has also earned him his sixth Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

5. Blade Runner 2049

A long-awaited and celebrated sequel of Blade Runner a full 35 years later, Blade Runner 2049 picks up decades after the first film ended. Replicants, or bioengineered humans, are being hunted down and “retired.” The LAPD discover the grave of a female replicant who died in childbirth. The dangerous revelation that replicants can reproduce is one that the the LAPD want to keep hidden, and task Ryan Gosling’s character K with putting the story to rest.

Nominations: Five nominations including Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, and Best Cinematography.

While Nanjiani plays himself in the film, the rest of the cast is portrayed by actors taking on the roles of his real life in-laws. Nanjiani meets his now wife Emily when she heckles him during his stand-up comedy routine. Nanjiani and Emily end up in a whirlwind relationship despite his family’s desire to set him up with a Pakistani wife. But when she ends up in a coma, he gets to know her parents in the strangest of circumstances.

7. Logan

This Marvel superhero movie is the tenth installment in the X-Men series, and is the last solo Wolverine movie to come out of the studio. It’s 2029, the X-Men are no more, and Logan’s self-healing powers are fading. An aging and dejected Wolverine is resigned to a life of alcohol and chauffeuring, but the appearance of a young mutant, Laura, who is fleeing evil characters pursuing her for secrets hidden in her DNA, revives him.

8. Loving Vincent

Loving Vincent, the first ever fully painted animated film, was partially funded through a Kickstarter campaign. Made up of 65,000 frames painted in the style of Vincent Van Gogh, the film tells the story of the painter’s life. The oil paintings bring to life the story of a young man who, when delivering Van Gogh’s final letter to his brother after his death, decides to dig deeper into the life of the late artist.

9. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

This might not be the kind of film you’d normally associate with the Academy Awards, but it’s definitely a fan favorite. The second installment of this franchise opens with the group fighting an inter-dimensional monster over precious batteries belonging to the Sovereign race. These beings will continue to appear throughout the film, as the team embarks on an adventure which reveals Peter Quill’s origin story.

10. Icarus

One of several Netflix originals nominated for an Oscar, Icarus is a documentary film that delves into the surprisingly sinister world of Russia’s state-sponsored Olympic doping program. Interviews with Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov, who was personally involved in Russia’s doping efforts, make up a major part of the documentary, and reveal what he describes as an extensive doping effort during the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

11. Last Men in Aleppo

Another contender for Best Documentary, also available on Netflix, is Last Men in Aleppo. The film documents life in the besieged city of Aleppo during the Syrian civil war, with a focus on the Nobel Peace Prize nominees, the White Helmets. The rescue group are on the front line rescuing civilians caught in airstrikes and attacks, and the film focuses in particular on three White Helmet founders.

12. Strong Island

Yet another Netflix original, Strong Island is a documentary feature directed by Yance Ford and details the murder of his brother, William Ford. In 1992, William, an African American man, is shot and killed at the age of 24 by Mark Reilly, a white 19-year-old mechanic. Ford uses this story to explore themes of racial injustice in the United States, beginning with the Jim Crow era in which racial segregation was commonplace in America’s south. His personal family grief intertwines with the story of racism in America.

13. The Florida Project

According to some critics, The Florida Project is one film that has gone largely unrecognized even with its one Oscar nomination. The drama tells the story of a single mother, Halley, living in a motel with her 6-year-old daughter. Halley struggles to make ends meet living in Orlando, Florida, leaving her young daughter unsupervised with her friends.

14. Heroin(e)

At just under 40 minutes, this Netflix original documentary follows three women in West Virginia battling the state’s opioid epidemic. In the city of Huntington, described in the documentary as the overdose capital of the United States, a judge, a fire chief, and a missionary are doing their part to combat the epidemic in what has been described as a story of hope.

15. Baby Driver

A young getaway driver finds himself forced to work for a crime boss, helping a team of men and women pull off daring robberies. Despite having partially lost his hearing, its the music he listens to that makes him the talented getaway driver that he is. Just when it seems like he is free of this crime-ridden life, he is dragged back in for one more heist.

16. Wonder

August “Auggie” Pullman is five-years-old and suffers from Treacher Collins syndrome, a genetic disorder that manifests as a facial deformity. Having been homeschooled for much of his life, his parents decide to enrol him in a private school. The story, based on the New York Times bestseller of the same title, tells the story of Auggie’s struggle to fit in and make friends.
