Paid Streaming Good, Free Streaming Bad

The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has published its report on the state of the music industry in 2015 [PDF link]. Overall revenues are up, rising 0.9 percent to $7 billion, but it’s the source of those revenues which makes for interesting reading.

Streaming now trumps everything in terms of revenue, generating $2.4 billion in 2015. However, the vast majority of that comes from paid subscriptions, with free, ad-supported streams only generating $385 million. This compares unfavorably to the $416 million generated by sales of vinyl, a format which is either awesome 5 Reasons Why Vinyl Is Better Than Digital for Music Lovers Digital music may be more convenient, but there are still plenty of reasons to listen to vinyl records. To end on a high note, let’s not forget that overall revenues have increased, suggesting that piracy really isn’t having the impact on sales it once did. Pornhub Launches a VR Porn Channel

And now we have another sign that VR may actually work out this time around… Pornhub is on board. Pornhub is, for the uninitiated, one of the biggest porn sites in existence, boasting 60 million visitors per day. And it has now launched a section dedicated to VR porn. We’re going to let you Google that rather than link to it directly. Because reasons.

Pornhub has partnered with a company called BaDoinkVR to showcase content that’s available to everyone but optimized for those using VR headsets. Pornhub Vice President Corey Price said in a statement:

“Virtual reality is the next phase in the constantly metamorphosing world of adult entertainment, and will provide users with a mesmeric experience unlike anything they’ve seen before. Now, our users are not only able to view our content, but be protagonists in the experience and interact with their favorite porn stars.”

The Star Wars Blu-ray Torrent Awakens

The home video release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is only a couple of weeks away, with the DVD and Blu-ray due to land in stores on April 5. However, as reported by TorrentFreak, a copy of the film has already leaked online, with pirates downloading it more than 250,000 times in the first 12 hours of it being available.

A poor quality copy of the movie has been floating around for months, of course, ever since one brave soul smelly thief filmed it in his local theater. But this is a clean copy, hence the rush to get hold of it prior to official release.

This will obviously have an impact on sales of the DVD and Blu-ray, but how much an impact remains in question. Plus, we’re talking about a movie that has already generated revenues of $2 billion, so it’s hard to feel too sorry for Disney and Lucasfilm.

The Drunk Hoverboard Prank

And finally, there’s only one thing that could make those dumb hoverboards (that aren’t really hoverboards) even dumber: a drunk rider. This YouTube prankster proves as much, by riding around Las Vegas on a hoverboard (not a hoverboard Lexus Made a Real Hoverboard - But It's Not What You Think Following a month of speculation, Lexus has unveiled a fascinating project to the world: a working hoverboard. Much hilarity ensues as he trolls passers-by, persuades strangers to stop him from falling, and generally acts like a fool. Which is exactly what he is. What have we learned from this? Nothing, except that I may be too prudish to fully appreciate what Vegas has to offer. [H/T CNET]
