Start Christmas early! Why wait for the end of the year to sprinkle cheer in someone’s life when you can do it right now from your couch?
Sites like Amazon and eBay provide guilt-free ways to donate to charitable causes while you shop online. And you don’t need to alter or deviate from your shopping spree in any way.
Use eBay to Support a Cause
You have good intentions, but you are either too busy or lazy. eBay for Charity uses several tools to help you donate a small slice of your spending money to several causes that need your dollars — whether you are buying or selling on eBay.
Donate When You Shop
As a shopper, you can buy items on eBay to support causes endorsed by the seller. Look out for items marked with the eBay for Charity icon (ribbon). Part or all of your purchase will support a certified nonprofit organization.
On the eBay for Charity page, you can also search for items by keyword, category, the specific cause, or nonprofit organization. On the product’s page, you can check the nonprofit that is being supported and what percentage of the sale the seller is donating to the nonprofit.
All charitable donations are handled by the PayPal Giving Fund. PayPal collects the donation from the seller and forwards 100 percent of the donation amount to the seller’s chosen nonprofit.
Give a Direct Donation to Your Favorite Charity
You can skip the above product listings and donate when you shop for products that are outside the charity listings. You can choose your favorite charity (or let eBay suggest it) and add a small contribution to your cart amount.
eBay explains the process:
- Go to eBay for Charity.
- Click on Charity Search on the left side of the page.
- Enter the name of your favorite charity in the search box, or browse the categories to find a charity that you would like to support.
- Click Add to My Favorites for your selected charity. You may need to sign in to eBay.
You don’t have to buy anything. As an alternative, just use Donate Now on eBay for Charity to make an online cash donation to your favorite nonprofit organization via your PayPal account.
Every Little Dollar Adds Up
You can give as little as $1. But the feeling of giving to something larger than yourself is always priceless. For instance, in the U.S., eBay for Charity is holding a special online auction in support of Homes For Our Troops with the goal of providing adapted homes for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans. eBay has more than 169 million members. Even a dollar per member can go very far.
