Well, if you walked away from your computer and remembered that you want to turn it off, you can actually do it from your phone!

First, you’ll need to download an app called Unified Remote on your phone (iOS, Android), and you’ll need to download it’s server to your PC from this website right here.

    So can this app access your PC when your phone's not on the same network? And do you need to enable remote desktop or is it secure? (Ie data goes from phone > to server > to PC and then starts a command)

    I use a program called Shutter. It has a web interface that allows me to these types of things from anywhere. Also free.

    I've been using PC Remote for years, but the UI is much nicer on this. Will give it a try.

    Not exactly for a PC, but I turn my monitors off, put my Mac to sleep, and occasionally turn it off over SSH using the Server Auditor app on my iPhone. I've turned my PC off a few times too, but haven't been able to put it to sleep, and you have to install Cygwin first.
