How to Turn Off Your PC Using Your Smartphone
Pinterest Stumbleupon Whatsapp

Do you like to turn your PC off when you’re not home to save electricity (or maybe just give it a break so it can cool off)?

Well, if you walked away from your computer and remembered that you want to turn it off, you can actually do it from your phone!

First, you’ll need to download an app called Unified Remote on your phone (iOS, Android), and you’ll need to download it’s server to your PC from this website right here.

Go through the installation process on your PC (it’s easy and there’s no spyware or any other nonsense that comes with it). Once finished, make sure the server app is running on your PC, and then open up the app on your phone. It’ll scan for a server on your local network, and once it finds it, it’ll let you control your PC.

Now, the way the app works is with a bunch of different remotes. There are remotes that’ll let you control your PC as if it was a mouse and keyboard, but turning off the PC with that would be difficult if you aren’t in the room. The remote we want is called Power. Click that, and then click Shutdown or Restart to turn your PC off.

I use a program called Shutter. It has a web interface that allows me to these types of things from anywhere. Also free.

I'm pretty sure this article has travelled through time to the future from 2006.

I've been using PC Remote for years, but the UI is much nicer on this. Will give it a try.

Might be more useful for people than an advert post featuring some app.

Not exactly for a PC, but I turn my monitors off, put my Mac to sleep, and occasionally turn it off over SSH using the Server Auditor app on my iPhone. I've turned my PC off a few times too, but haven't been able to put it to sleep, and you have to install Cygwin first.
