With the ever-increasing popularity of smartphones, the market for headphones is constantly growing. How do you make your earphones stand out? Of course, they have to look nice and sound great, but there has to be something more. Earphones that are comfortable, good-looking and with top-notch sound quality are a dime a dozen in today’s market, so you need something else.
Introducing the thinksound ms01
The thinksound msS01 in-ear monitors (or IEMs, which is a type of earphone that sits within the ear canal) fitted with 8mm drivers claim to offer “studio sound right in your ear.” They are going for an ultra high quality earphone that is able to capture all the ranges of your music. Whether you are listening to music with reverberating bass or smooth highs and midrange notes, the thinksound ms01 wants to be the only in-ear monitors you need.
The other purpose of thinksound is to offer a low carbon footprint. The earphones are made with renewable wood, instead of metal or plastic like most companies. Their packaging is also minimal. The $99 earphones come in a very small box that is not filled with packing inserts and other wastes that you will find with so many other pieces of electronics.
The post consumer box includes four silicone ear inserts, the earphones, ear-hooks which goes around your ear, a cable clip, documentation, and a small mesh bag to carry everything. It is refreshing to see that thinksound hasn’t included a massive load of packaging material compared to the actual product contained within.
When you compare the price of their competition, the thinksound ms01 comes in right around the average. Monster’s Beats by Dre in-ear models are priced right around $100 and those by Bose cost closer to $130.
I was impressed with the thinksound ms01 when I took them out of the package. The first thing I noticed is that they are beautiful. The wood really adds to the style of the earphones and makes them stand out from the competition.
The four different silicone ear fittings were great, and they give you options to get just the right fit. thinksound recommends trying all four sizes before you lock in on one, and I would have to agree with their assessment. Having the right size is important because not only does it make them more comfortable, but it also makes sure they are able to block outside noise properly.
I was pleasantly surprised that the earphones included an around-the-ear hook for people leading a more active lifestyle. You simply run the cord through the hooks on the top and place the earphones in your ears as you would normally. If you are using your thinksound ms01 in-ear monitors for running or other vigorous activity, these are an awesome accessory.
Obviously, when talking about earphones, the most important factor is sound quality. This is especially true of high-end models like the the thinksound ms01. I will just say the sound quality is fantastic. They are able to dynamically hit every range of sound. Regardless of what genre of music you are using them for, you will find the sound quality is stupendous.
The one problem with the sound is that I encountered some instances of cable noise from it rubbing on clothes, but using the cord hook solved that for me.
The bass is where these earphones really shine. It offers a depth to the bass that you will have a hard time finding with other in-ear monitors. Most earphones tend to lack in their ability to punch the bass, but I tested these with some old-school rap and dubstep, and they had no problem hitting the really low notes.
For midrange, these earphones are also very good. All too often, midrange sounds are forgotten, with everyone seemingly worried about how well they can hit the highs and lows. thinksound did not forget about midrange, and their overall sound quality is much better because of it.
The one problem with the sound comes in the highs. While the high sound great most of the time, cymbal smashes and other higher sounds they can be a little sharp. At higher volumes, the sharpness is more pronounced. Of course, you should not be blasting music anyway, but it is just something to be prepared for.
I was able to crank to volume up on these without any distortion. My ears started to hurt from the high volume before the earphones had an issue. That is a good thing if you are using these somewhere loud and you need to turn them up. It is always good to know that, even if you do not blast the volume in your day-to-day usage, the thinksound ms01 can handle it.
Is the thinksound ms01 comfortable?
A major factor when you are choosing a pair of in-ear monitors is how comfortable they are. If you are going to be shoving them in your ears for an extended period, you want them to fit well and be comfortable.
With the thinksound ms01, you are given four different silicone ear inserts, so you can find the fit that is correct for you. I actually had to go one size smaller than I thought I would. The size that looked right for my ears was not very comfortable and would pop out if I talked with the eaprhones in. I dropped down one size and they fit perfectly.
Overall, they are very comfortable. They are light and hardly noticeable. With the ear-hooks, you can use them for vigorous activity and they stay locked in your ears very well.
Should You Buy It?
All in all, the thinksound ms01 is a solid pair of earphones. They are able to hit high volume levels without any distortion and they can easily handle notes in any range. They are a little punchy on the highs, but still great overall.
If you are looking for a lightweight, comfortable pair of headphones made by a company who is taking steps to improve the environment, the $99 thinksound ms01 is a great choice.
For $99, these earphones are comfortable and environmentally-friendly.
