Is IMDb our portal into Hollywood? By the seventh month of this year, the IMDb mobile app for iOS and Android had logged 40 million downloads. So, it could very well be. IMDb is the de facto encyclopedia when it comes to movie information. The good thing is IMDb is not just a dull warehouse of entertainment information, but a powerful discovery tool also. There’s a lot to discover when the Amazon owned website keeps all the news on over 2 million movie and television titles.
But why use an iOS (or Android) app, when the website is a click away? Convenience firstly…you can always tap into any movie for something as simple as latest showtimes, or as deep as a critic’s take. Secondly – even though it’s a personal opinion – the Retina Display just makes my favorite actresses photo galleries a ‘touch’ more wonderful.
You can run the IMDb Movies & TV app (ver. 2.8) on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch (all require iOS 5 or later).
Just the Right App to Download Before the Oscars
The nominations will be out on January 2013. The fever will ratchet up if you are a fan. Some of your favorite movies could be in the running. Could it be Lincoln, The Master, or even The Dark Knight Rises? The IMDb app could be the thing to help you brush up on them. Here’s the first look:
I find the first look of the iOS app better than the view on the website. It is neater and does not force us into areas where we could get lost in the flood of information and not find our way back. You can skim through the trailers, and as you can see, each is also deftly represented by its poster. You can click on the poster and go to the movie information page. We will look at a movie’s information page a bit later. Let’s return to the main screen and like the fact that along with movies, television shows and celeb profiles get their due importance.
The STARMeter rankings that you see in the above screenshot are buried deep inside the web version of IMDb. Click on a celeb’s thumbnail and get all the dope on him or her like a photo gallery, mini-biography, trivia, filmography, and news. The gallery is a visual delight. You can tap any and it enlarges to fill the screen.
One of the nicest features of the IMDb iOS app is the Showtimes section. It is located front and center, so you can conveniently check what’s playing while riding pillion over a minefield. You can allow the app to discover your location automatically, or specify it yourself within a certain distance.
All available showtimes are split into new releases and Also Playing. The showtimes are sortable by movie or by theater. You can check showtimes for the entire week. With a touch on the Theater button, you can check if any are close by. Diving into each theater; you can check their exact location on a map, contact information; and you can also see what else they are playing.
The only thing you can’t do on IMDb is buy tickets straight from the phone or the iPad. Maybe, one day you will be able to buy a ticket with Apple’s Passbook.
Sometimes, more than movies, you just might be interested to know what’s playing on the idiot box today. IMDb lets you know what’s on tonight, along with episode recap details.
The Other Little Touches
Being IMDb, any information on the movie itself is always a click away. Each movie in the showtime list also has a trailer, an age rating, the time it is playing, its total runtime, a Metascore, and how many stars it has been awarded.
Being IMDb, there are many points of information. Here are some more key features you might appreciate:
- Be the first to be informed on the latest DVD releases.
- You can sign in to view and create lists of your favorite movies. You can also rate movies from the app.
- Even if you don’t watch a single movie, enjoy quotes, trivia and goofs about movies, TV shows and celebrities.
- Get notified about top news, latest releases, upcoming trailers, and featured photos. You can toggle them off.
- Go into the settings and set the maximum video quality for viewing trailers.
You can expect 2 million movie and television titles to be an ocean. Search them from the search bar or use the iOS app’s tools, the shore is very far off. We have covered IMDb and its comprehensiveness in many hues over the years. The iOS app is the latest. So, give us a user review if you are using it. If not, maybe it’s time to head to the Apple Store.
