This week in Weird & Wonderful Web, we delve deep into the world of selfies, taking a look at the best and worst examples of this phenomenon that hit the mainstream in a big, bad way during 2013. The people who take selfies may be nothing but vainglorious poseurs embarking on a bit of narcissistic photographic pleasure, but we love them regardless. As long as they take our advice for things to avoid when taking selfies.
What Are Selfies?
We should probably backtrack a little first and explain, for those who have been fortunate enough for the selfie phenomenon to pass them by, what we’re actually talking about. Thankfully, an Urban Dictionary entry explains all, and with some very entertaining definitions.
These definitions aren’t exactly complimentary to the people who take selfies, but that’s exactly as it should be. It’s interesting to note how many definitions have been added through the course of 2013, proving how mainstream this act has become, but the top-rated definition is from 2009, proving that selfies also aren’t entirely new.
What Your Selfies Mean
So, you’re a fan of selfies. Fair enough, that’s your right. But, please be aware that the selfie you’re inflicting on the world is giving people an idea of the type of person you are. Don’t believe me? Then take this sarcastic, camp, white kid’s word for it. He is, after all, clearly speaking from experience.
Selfies At Funerals/Serious Places
If you have to take a selfie then you should bear in mind that there’s a time and a place for them. And, conversely, there are times and places where you shouldn’t take a selfie under any circumstances. At funerals, for example, or while visiting a serious place such as a war memorial.
These Tumblr sites were set up to draw attention to the worst examples of selfies, but sadly neither are being updated any longer. Still, they exist as an ever-present reminder of where and when you shouldn’t take a selfie.
Selfies With Strangers
How would you react if a complete stranger snapped a selfie which included you in the background? Probably not as well as the people in this video, most of whom are very gracious and even pose for the camera. And this was filmed in London no less, which, though a great city, isn’t exactly known for its friendliness.
Nicolas Cage Selfies
Selfies can be made tolerable by combining them with another craze that has filled up the many tubes of the Internetz in 2013. Yes, Mr. Nicolas Cage is here to save the day, with a website called Feeling Cagey? improving the constant feed of Instagram selfies with Cage’s face. And what a face it is.
GTA V Selfies [NSFW]
Selfies were everywhere through 2013, and they even made it into the virtual world of video games. In the epic Grand Theft Auto V you had the option of making your character take a selfie, and this video shows one guy doing just that again and again and again. And again.
The Best & Worst Selfies Of 2013
And so we come to the end of 2013, and a roundup of the best and worst selfies seen throughout the year. This list by The Guardian newspaper is the best on the Web, with astronauts, politicians, singers, celebrities, kooks, animals, and even The Pope, making an appearance.
