Spotify is testing a new app called Stations. As the name implies, this standalone app is based around playlists, the modern-day equivalent of radio stations. Unfortunately, you probably can't try Stations for yourself yet, as Spotify is severely limiting who is able to access it.

Anyone who uses Spotify will tell you how good it is. It's not perfect, but then neither are Apple Music, Google Play Music, or Tidal. However, as good as Spotify is, sometimes you don't need anything quite as fancy. Sometimes you just want to hit Play and listen to the music...

Press Play and Let the Music Take You

Spotify seems to have realized people don't always want or need anything as complicated as its app. So it has developed a standalone app that takes all of the effort out of listening to music. It's called Stations, it's free, and it's currently being tested by a handful of people.

Stations by Spotify does have a listing on Google Play that anyone can visit. However, if you try installing it the chances are you'll be informed that the app isn't compatible with any of your devices, or isn't available in your country. It may even be limited just to Spotify employees.

From what we can ascertain, Stations is all based around playlists. Once you open the app a long list of themed playlists appears, and you click on the one that interests you. You can Like tracks to teach the app what you like, but it isn't yet clear whether you can Skip tracks you don't like.

The key thing about Stations is its simplicity. There's no searching for specific songs, and no option to download albums. It's just music playing uninterrupted apart from the occasional ad for free users. Which makes it perfect for gym workouts, long commutes, or for just chilling out.

Your New Favorite Streaming Music App

Spotify has made it clear that Stations is just an experiment, so it may never be officially released to all but a handful of people. Alternatively it could be your new favorite streaming music app, taking the hard work out of using Spotify. We will, of course, keep you posted.

Do you use Spotify? Do you currently use the free version or do you pay for Premium? What do you think of Stations? Is this simple style of app something that appeals to you? Or do you prefer to choose which songs you're playing at all times? Please let us know in the comments below!
