Sony is making a big change to the way PlayStation Plus works. Because from March 2019 there will be no more free games for PS3 or PS Vita. Instead, Sony is going all-in on the PlayStation 4. Unfortunately, the price is staying the same despite this change.

Since 2010, Sony has been giving free games to PlayStation Plus subscribers. PS Plus isn't free, but the games are just one part of the subscription. Sony has been giving away two PS4 games, two PS3 games, and two PS Vita games, but that's now coming to an end.

PlayStation Minus

At the end of the PlayStation Blog post revealing the games being given away this month, Sony makes an "important service update". Which is that from March 2019, the PS Plus monthly games lineup will "no longer include PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita titles".

Crucially, this is a whole year away, giving PS3 and Vita owners plenty of notice. It also gives PS3 owners time to upgrade to the PS4. Unfortunately, Sony hasn't released a new handheld console, so PS Vita owners may want to jump ship to the Nintendo 3DS XL.

Any games you download prior to March 8, 2019 will not be affected by this change, as long as you keep paying for PS Plus. It's just that there will be no new titles added to your library. Which will make that $59.99/year asking price harder to swallow.

As for why Sony has made this decision, it's all down to the numbers. Sony claims most people with a PS Plus subscription now own a PS4, and so there's just no demand for PS3 and PS Vita games. But gamers who own those consoles may beg to differ.

More PlayStation 4

Sony has been criticized for the quality of PS4 games it gives away on PS Plus. With most being indie titles that most people will never play. What gamers really want is the big games they may have missed, maybe a year or two after their initial release.

Things are now improving, with Bloodborne and Ratchet and Clank (the games for March 2018) being prime examples. However, taking PS3 and PS Vita games out of the equation surely means Sony will have to start giving away even better PlayStation 4 games, right?

Do you own a PS4, a PS3, and/or Vita? How do you feel about Sony stopping giving away PS3 and Vita games? Are you likely to cancel your subscription as a result? Or is PS Plus still good value for money? Please let us know in the comments below!
